Which TV?

Hey guys.
Wonder if anyone can give me any pointers. I'm looking for around £1200 now or £1800 after Christmas. Need a new TV for the front room as my 18mnth old LG is turning itself on and off. Has done well as on 24/7 in this house and was 52" smart 3D etc for £400 from sainsbury.

I'm no technophobe but as prices are so cheap now I'd like to buy something that's a bit better quality/picture.
I'd like 52" up really, I know you can go too big for the room but is a large room and could prob fit a 65" in and it wouldn't look stupid. Not really worried about 3D as don't use it now. Would like one with real vivid bright colour. Due to house location all TV has to be run through Sky, as in I have no normal aerial.
That's about as far as my knowledge goes. Can anyone give me ideas what to look for so I don't get my pants pulled down too far when I go to buy?

Flat or Curved? And then there's the confusion of To look for HD, Ultra HD, 4K, Oled etc. Plasma, Led and all that. Someone said it was better to get a plasma as the blacks are blacker? Surely LED is newer?!!

Thanks in advance guys

I have a plasma, i found on the larger the screens the quality was better when i purchased it.
Its been a couple of years since I've been looking though and LED has come on a lot in that time.
I always go for Panasonic as they last the distance.
I have a 55" and its been great for the last 3 years and the picture is still perfect.

I will get 4K on the next one.

Have a look at Richer Sounds they have a fantastic range and their knowledge is second to none. They normally offer 5 years warranty too, so a bit of a bonus.

They let me take a 4K TV home to try before I bought, would Currys do that?

Cheers fella.
I know I should be looking in the shop for one I like, just trying to do some homework. I fancy the proper vivid bright ones, but think the sky may restrict it?
Is 4K the latest advance then at the moment? With TVs being so cheap I'm hoping my budget should buy a fairly good one. Yeah I was told Plasma ( and 3D). Even though I don't use the 3D apparently 3D all has dual prosessors that eliminate any delay on screen? Dunno how much is true!! Haha Accept, some days your the pigeon, some days your the statue!

Oh cool. Hadn't thought about them to be honest! I'm sure there's one local in Romford!
I've heard Costco do an awesome warranty too. Accept, some days your the pigeon, some days your the statue!

I got the 4K tv I mentioned and I have Sky and it's fantastic. The tv I have also up scales the signal to almost 4K so the picture is sharp, bright and vivid and the amount of customisation you can do to the picture is almost endless.

I would say that a curved screen is now being recognised as a fad and not really applicable in a living room environment, as you need to be sat in an optimum place to fully appreciate the picture, so one maybe two people might see the benefit but others at the same time won't, just like 3D maybe.....

I would still be looking at UHD 4K TV but would probably go for OLED next time. Good luck it's a mine field out there but have a talk with richer sounds, they also have a website.. ______________________________

I believe you would have a problem finding plasma nowadays. I have an LG Oled which is very good. They now do Oled 4k which I would be considering if I were in the market,

My daughter has a Samsung which is also very good, John

Be lucky to find a decent plasma, Panasonic stopped making them about two years ago! (I bought on of the last 50inch VT series plasmas)

For really bright, vivid colours a Samsung is a good bet, I wouldn't bother with 4K (if you can avoid it!) - as you're not putting a 4K signal into it you will likely get a worse picture as the TVs has to do loads of extra work to scale the lower detail signal up to match the screen resolution (google interpolation - all the stuff written about more detail to total bs, you cannot add detail to a signal!). Due to the bandwidth required by 4K I don't ever see it being delivered over anything other than fibre broadband in the medium term, he'll Sky HD is not even 'proper' full frame refresh HD....

Good luck with the search! 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

TV:
Curved - NO! After years of CRTs, we finally get flat TVs you can hang on the wall, then they think they should be curved again. WTF? It reduces the viewing angle, so not good unless you watch alone.
Plasma - no longer made
LED - most TV for your £ these days. They have improved a lot.
OLED - new, excellent but expensive. They are great, but not as bright as LED, so you want a room in which you can control the light. If the room is usually very bright, go LED instead.
Size - as the TVs get clearer, go can watch a bigger screen from closer. Why not put up a bit of masking tape in different screen sizes to see what suits you and the room. My father has a 65" in a small room and it works well. >65" and the price starts going up faster than the screen size!
4K - most cinemas project their huge, excellent pictures in 2K. You are unlikely to see a 4K benefit with <65" unless you're only inches away. I won't pay more fit 4K. But it's often bundled with High Dynamic Range, which IS worthwhile. Also, it's becoming the go to on top TVs. So, fine if it's there, not don't pay extra for it.

Some good advice above. I have just had to research this for a client. 4K has now been superseded by Dolby Vision or HDR10 just to add to the confusion.

Samsung and Sony are the only ones to offer HDR10 whilst the main player for Dolby Vision is LG.

HDR10 is a software upgrade where as Dolby Vision is hardware. Theoretically if you buy a screen with Dolby Vision you might find it is also HDR10 and therefore can play both formats.

Not many providers are streaming content in either formats at the moment although Netflix is supposed to be rerendering 10000 films with Dolby Vision.

At the moment its a bit like the old Betamax versus VHS technology as to which one will be favourite.

As previously mentioned by someone else here - you can have the best TV available but if your internet connection / provider does not stream in UHDR / Dolby Vision / HDR10 then the picture will only be as good as the available format.

I have 2 50"+ Samsungs one is a higher range 4K and the other is a 600 quids one both are fed from sky boxes and with an Hd feed both give good pictures.

4K is currently pointless. Streamed 4K isn't proper 4K so you need a dedicated 4K source to get the full benefit which isn't really an option at the moment. Look for one with an inbuilt upscaler so you at least get some benefit from the better display.

BT offer 4K via their tv service but its on sport only. Sky don't, the rest of the streamed services are variable dependant on connection speeds.

Curved is pointless, if you have external boxes for sky etc the internal tuners do nothing so are redundant, if however you watch broadcast terrestrial freeview then pay close attention to the tuners, ability to attach a hard drive for recording and time shift

Both mine are LeD tellys but I would be tempted to go oled next time, they seem to give a glossier image. If you are a COSTCO member then they are a good place to buy as they too give a free extended no quibble warranty. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

After about 4 months of chexking, asking, comparing we bought a Panasonic VIERA 65in flat 4k "everything" TV.
Its been the best compromise between panel quality, colour, speed (lcd needs a good calcukating device for fast moving pics) and general "can do's" with sound, wlan, online services and app compatibility.
