What can go wrong next, timing guide failure this time

Timing guides have failed on my 4.4 2003 m62, does anyone have or know of somewhere l can hire the engine locking set, l have managed to get all the parts down to 210 quid which is a mixture of genuine land rover, genuine bmw and febi bilstein. The locking kit is nearly as much again and due all my recent issues funds are depleted. It wont be until sometime in august or septemberad got some saving to do now
Thanks
John

I'm not sure if I'd recommend it, though it is possible to do the job with out them.

I believe there are 2 parts to the set. One part is the pin that locks the flywheel, and this is useful to get the crank bolt out. I've removed this bolt without the pin by using a stillson and a really long bar on a 1" socket - the bar needed to be about 6-foot long and wasn't easy.

The other part locks the cam shafts in place at 90-degrees to the head. I did this part without locking them and being careful to make sure they didn't move far and then re-installing the chain making sure the blocks at the rear were at the correct 90-degree angle.

It worked fine, though others might say I was lucky.

Have you seen this article which is very good? www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/876903 The blocks at the rear of the cams can be seen in the pictures of section 28. Current:

Can you post a list of the parts and where you got them from? A friend is about to do this on his 7 series and the vanos on ours is starting the start up rumble. If im in fixing that I'll do the timing guides at the same time!

Ok all done, carried out timing chain rebuild on the august bank holiday weekend, only help needed was for someone to put the locking tools on the back cam. The inlet cam on the pass side had jumped 2 teeth. All in all with filter, gaskets, timing location kit, oil and parts the whole job cost a little over 500 pounds. However some points to note for anyone tackling the job.
Make sure you remove the oil strainer which is accessible when removing the sump plate as it was blocked by old timing guide parts.
When removing the timing cover make a cardboard template and put all the bolts into the corresponding holes, as they are different lengths.
I did not remove the main sump or gasket, the gasket is metal so just used some good quality sealant where the timing cover joins.
The front pulley is very tight, once all other parts are removed there is enough room to get a pair of stilsons on the body of the pulley and will lock out on the chassis, then use a decent bar. It did leave a couple of marks but cleaned straight up and could not even tell.
First start was a bit scary but once oul had got round it sounded sweet. 600 miles now and the engine is whisper quiet, super smooth and oil leak free.
Vid of engine first start here, there was a distorted washer on the belt tensioner that was rubbing slightly and the camera had some oil contamination on the lens so sorry for the blurry picture.

Yep, when she first rattled to life my heart just sank. It sounded exactly the same, but I sort of expected it if that makes sense. But even so it was nerve racking. But very glad its done, especially knowing that this is one of the more common issues, at one point I just wanted to give up as it peed it down all weekend with only a gazeebo as cover, as if being in a wheelchair was not challenging enough! But anyone attempting it should just take their time with it. Looks daunting when stripped but access is amazing.
May be a coincidence but I did an oil change a month before it went and used mobil 1 new life 0/40. The guides collapse shortly after this so do not know if this just highlighted a weak hydraulic chain tensioner causing the failure. But using slightly thicker 5/40 from now on.

It had just done 101k, I have only done 3k in it so was alitrle disappointed. But I now know it should last a good few years with regular servicing.

That kit will lock the cams and flywheel so in theory you could get away with it, however this kit http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-M60-M62-CAMS...&rt=nc is the kit I bought. That way you can make sure your vanos units are in the correct position and also has a manual timing tensioner to allow you to check the timing under tension. This one was an auction. He does sell them buy it now.as pointed out to me its not worth the risk of having your vanos units a tooth out.
