I'm not sure if I'd recommend it, though it is possible to do the job with out them.

Can you post a list of the parts and where you got them from? A friend is about to do this on his 7 series and the vanos on ours is starting the start up rumble. If im in fixing that I'll do the timing guides at the same time! |

Ok all done, carried out timing chain rebuild on the august bank holiday weekend, only help needed was for someone to put the locking tools on the back cam. The inlet cam on the pass side had jumped 2 teeth. All in all with filter, gaskets, timing location kit, oil and parts the whole job cost a little over 500 pounds. However some points to note for anyone tackling the job.

Yep, when she first rattled to life my heart just sank. It sounded exactly the same, but I sort of expected it if that makes sense. But even so it was nerve racking. But very glad its done, especially knowing that this is one of the more common issues, at one point I just wanted to give up as it peed it down all weekend with only a gazeebo as cover, as if being in a wheelchair was not challenging enough! But anyone attempting it should just take their time with it. Looks daunting when stripped but access is amazing.

It had just done 101k, I have only done 3k in it so was alitrle disappointed. But I now know it should last a good few years with regular servicing. |

That kit will lock the cams and flywheel so in theory you could get away with it, however this kit http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-M60-M62-CAMS...&rt=nc is the kit I bought. That way you can make sure your vanos units are in the correct position and also has a manual timing tensioner to allow you to check the timing under tension. This one was an auction. He does sell them buy it now.as pointed out to me its not worth the risk of having your vanos units a tooth out. |
