Trans Failsafe...Again!

Hi all

Sorry for raising the Trans FailSafe thing after its been talked about so much, but im struggling.

2004 RR TD6. Had a LR Refurb G/box fitted before I brought it so was hopeing to get away with these sort of probs!.

Got a call from other half. Car was all driving fine. Got 3 mile from home on a straight road and car lost power and message Trans Failsafe Prog came up on the dash with no bong.
Pulled it into a layby and turned it off for 20 mins. I got there started it up and no message. There was a light noise like a fanbelt squeel when first select reverse but it soon shut up. Car drove ok for 1/2 mile then the message came back up. Car drives ok when selecting "D" and "R".

When driving if you knock it across to manual it lights up 1-2-3-4 etc on the dashboard, but instantly flashes back to "5". (which is what I guess is the Failsafe bit?)

Car seems to drive fine, except is slightly less power when pulling away. Message is now constantly displayed. Ive driven car home but seems to whine a bit in D and R. Cant see no leaks.

Im gonna head home and try to see if my Icarsoft will show anything (doubt it).

Is there anything else I should try to help identify what could be happening?

I appreciate theres a million posts, and I will start reading through them as soon as home. Just wondered if theres any obvious stuff to start trying? like driving backwards up a hill or something?

Any advise will be awesome.

Cheers guys

So cars been sitting for 5hrs. Started with no messages. Cleared all faults with icarsoft. There were quite a few stored but hasn’t been cleared for ages.

Drove car about 3 mile, stop starting with no issues. No noises in any gears.

Kinda wondering if it’s gonna all come back when gearbox gets warm. Not sure if to bury head in sand and continue trying to use it (have got 20 mile round trip to pick other half up from work tonight). Or park it up and worry not knowing what to do!!

Was kind of hopeing the message was gonna come back up. Plug in icarsoft and it may point me in the direction. Accept, some days your the pigeon, some days your the statue!

Update
So moved the car 100 yards last night and it came up with fault and went into limp mode. Reset it with Icarsoft (was showing “Gear 5 incorrect ratio” as the fault). Car drives ok again. 100 yards later back into limp mode. When in limp mode I get a light fan belt like noise from “D” and “R”.
I continue resetting and 100 yards later it going back to limp mode until I decide to try Sport mode. When in sports mode there is no noise and car does not go into fault.

Kind of concluded that as soon as car tries going into 5th it will go fault mode and start making the fan belt noise. Guessing sport mode keeps it in 1,2,3,4 and so doesn’t fault or make the noise?

Decided to drain oil and change filter before resigning to putting it in somewhere for a recon gearbox to be fitted.

Oil is dark red/brown. No particles or debris in sump. Magnet clean except for some very light “carbon” black dust?

Ordered oil and filter so will refit and try again Monday. Fingers crossed although I’m not holding out much hope!!

Am in Essex. Anyone have any gearbox recommendations? Cheapest I’ve found so far is Liverpool £1200

Cheers

Really not sure without pulling paperwork out (I’m out at moment) I’d guess around 75k ish? It had a new LR supplies and fitted box before I got it. I’ve put about 50k on it. So guess 75k ish?

Was kinda expecting to find black oil, or debris in sump least then I’d know it was box failure. The clean “ish” oil and clean sump has kinda thrown me. Accept, some days your the pigeon, some days your the statue!
