Windscreen Washer Fluid Level

Just a quick warning to check the level of your Windscreen Washer Fluid as if its nearly empty (or empty) the fluid can run back out of the pipes leaving them "Non primed" and allowing the pipes and nozzles to freeze. Once frozen they are very difficult to defrost with the temperature below freezing making driving on salted roads impossible.

I just picked up a 2007(57) Vogue TDV8 which had been allowed to run dry and after filling with washer fluid I had a very "Interesting" journey round the M25 from surrey with a very smeared windsreen and frozen nozzles.

To fix I poured warm water over nozzles and hand squeezed the freed pipes under bonnet to find remove any frozen sections. Only after about 15 minutes with the engine running did they finally start working again.

Be warned keep it topped up Thumbs Up

The nozzles themselves are heated, and the system has a 1 way valve in so the tubes should drain back into the tank... However if you dont use anti-freeze in there then the 1 way valves get damaged and as you say all the fluid will drain out of the lines...

Thanks Dan I did not know the technical reason but as the tank was dry and the system did not work after refilling I figured "frozen" as the car was covered in deep snow when I collected it. It started working after poured warm water on nozzles and I hand massaged the tubes after refilling it with Screen wash. Perfect now Thumbs Up

Most screenwash is barely frost proof, the stuff you buy in the petrol stations is generally only good for -5, and even then there is a considerable amount of "slush" in the fluid that will block the pickup filter.

The ones that advertise protection to -45c! only give that level of protection if used neat. And that gets expensive!

So far my ingenious mix of water and meguiars hyper wash car shampoo has worked a treat, no smearing, hasn't froze up at all and makes for some interesting frozen bubbles. 2006 Mercedes CLS

Heated you say? Mine are hit and miss in this weather even with a full bottle of screenwash in it....

Anyway to test if they're operating as intended?

As a cost of around £6.00 I would nust replace them anyway. I supose you could measure the resistance or something?
