Gearbox Specialist Opinions...

Hi, so it appears that my nice low mileage TD6's gearbox (GM5l40) has decided that it no longer wants to be a gearbox and that grinding itself to pieces would be better! Basically i have noticed that it doesn't like changing down when decelerating. The oil and filter was changed not long ago (filtrans filter correct spec oil etc) but i have just inspected it and the oil has started to 'brown' and has an amount of metalic particles present! 😠 So knowing that these boxes are made of the finest dairy milk i am now looking for a replacement. I am in the trade and have a very dim view of most garages/specialists so when it comes to bits that are a bit more specialist i like to research a lot before commiting to give someone work!

Has anybody used or got experience of the following companies?

Jt transmissions in erith in Kent
Gravesend Transmissions in er Gravesend kent
Stephens engineering in Ware

All say they upgrade with Sonnax parts...

Any other suggestions appreciated as well.
Thanks!

Mzplcg, thanks for the reply. I had a little scan through the forum and saw that rrphil is highly respected and now doing builds. It looks as if he is only concentrating on the zf5hp24 box sadly (for me) though. Or have i missed something?

I used these for a rebuild. Never had any problems.

I would PM Phil and get his opinion. If he can't do it himself he will doubtless know someone who can, and who works to his standards.

Mackies in Glasgow always seem to get the best reviews across forums and clubs in a partnof for anything from parts to full refurb, but as above rrphil would be my first port of call as I'm sure he has done work on the GM chocolate boxes. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Yes, I’m just specialising in the ZF 5HP24 transmission for now. As kingpleb has already mentioned, John Mackie’s place in Glasgow is highly respected and I’ve also seen good comments on here about STA in Aylesbury. Clearly, though, personal recommendations from forum members who have actually had the work done would be the best guide.

I think... That the recommended action, on these gearboxes, is to have the solenoids up rated at the same time, as the gearbox reconditioned

There is a mob in Melbourne Australia, that does upgrade parts for these transmissions and targets specifically the weaknesses with re engineered upgrade parts.
Have a look about the aulro web site.
This trans was more than enough to scare me off getting a tractor engine in my L322.
