Wales 2004 Range Rover Vogue Td6 Adriatic Blue
Headlights

Hello All,
Trust well.

May I say this site is the lifeblood of my Rangie. Keep it going and may long well you all live!

Can anyone offer an explaination why after a while, say 5 mins or so, my N/S xenon headlight goes off, 2004 vogue TD6 then only to be switched on again by switching the headlight switch off then back on?

It will then stay on for longer the second time around say for 10 mins then go off with the message displayed again, check headlamp bulb.

I repeat this exercise a number of times much to the alarm of on comming vehicles who often flash back but after around 4 times they tend to stay on all the time.

Have also noted it doesn't just suddenly go off it flickers first then goes.

Have replaced both original bulbs which were getting a bit dim with the osram night breaker about 6 months ago (last winter) which I am very pleased with.

Suppose I had better swop them round just incase it's a dodgy bulb.

Thanks for your time and remember, Friday night is curry night!

I had similar problems with a 2004 car. First one side and then a few years later the other side started doing it. Replacing bulbs made no difference for me.

Once the light starts to switch off, the frequency slowly gets worse and worse. It seems to be caused by a faulty ignitor (the black box with a red lead that leads to the light). You can get inside the lights and replace this part, though the cost of a new ignitor is very high.

Easiest and cheapest way to fix is to buy a 2nd hand light assembly from ebay for about £60 (though the price of these are going up) and replace the whole thing. Make sure you get the light with the ballast resistor on the back of the light. Selling the glass lens and the ballast resistor from your old light gets back most of the cost of the replacement.

Alternative is to convert to the 2006-on or 2010-on look. Current:

Mine had this fault when I first had the car

It turned out to be the ballest pack screwed to the back of the headlamp unit,
Easy fix 3torx screws and plug and play

Used around £40 of flebay, same as some bmw minis, audi ect

If it was the ignighter the bulb would not light at all

Thanks or that.

Bought some contact cleaner this morning took both side covers and bulb conectors off, they didn't seem twisted on tight enough especially on going back and gave everything a "good blast!"

Certainly alot of wiring inside but it all looked secured.

Hopefully a quick fix, will probably find out tonight as taking son back to uni in London with Rangie now.

Thanks for the relplies.
