United Kingdom 2006 Range Rover Vogue SE Supercharged Java Black
Another faulty reverse camera.

Hi,

My Rear view camera on my 2006 SC has started playing up today, I'm guessing the continual heavy rain over the last few days has accelerated its demise. When I reversed the car this morning I was presented with a black screen, it did the same when I left work this evening, but was fine when I pulled into my drive when I arrived home.

I've searched the forum and read the wiki and it looks like I have a few options.

1) Replace we the same low resolution camera from LR. As my car is a 2006, will i get an improvement from a 2007 MY (or later) camera?

2) Replace with 2010 MY high def camera, but can anyone explain what I need to do with the additional two connectors in the later camera.

3) Buy a cheap after market unit and fashion it on best I can. Can anyone confirm that I need NTSC rather than PAL?

4) Hold tight until a replacement comes up on ebay.

Any advise welcome, and apologies for starting yet another thread in this topic.

Thanks,

Justin

Think the other two connectors are for the Vision assist pack .

Personally i would hang fire till one came up on flea bay , how often do you really use the rear view camera

Is it worth removing it to dry it out and then reseal the case with silicon sealer?

Might be worth a try , but i remember on my old SC the picture went black a few times then went Grainy then came back then after a while gave up the ghost and chucked it , quite common fault on the 06 Mdls …

Dealer wanted £500 to replace ... Shocked

Yes, I remember when your camera was playing up, and the thought of spending £500 for a pi55 poor camera is seriously depressing. Although, I'm happy to spend a bit if I can improve the picture so that it works in the dark.

If i get the chance i will take it apart this weekend and see whats causing it to fail, perhaps i can clean up any corrosion and re-waterproof it, to keep it going for a while longer.

It wouldn't feel so bad if I had not paid £780 for the LR select warranty that does not cover any of the faults my car is now exhibiting Sad

I got the updated 2010 non-vision assist camera for £90 the loom for £30 and the holder for £5.

The pic is great and has the yellow (non-bending) lines.

There is also no nasty seam across the edge of the camera where the moisture gets in to ruin it.

Same FAKRA/SMB connection.

I am still hoping to do a write up of the swap as I have some pics, but no time- I'm currently enjoying the Emerald Isle in Limerick working 15-18 hours a day!

Once I get back I will try to take some leave and get the cam write up done.

Any issues let me know. Dan from Duckworths was awesome about the parts.#

Thumbs Up

happymadison1978 -did you buy the loom because the connector was different, or was your loom damaged?

My rear view camera worked intermittently when I set off from home this morning, but had stopped again when I got to work, so I decided to take it off and have a look inside.

Removal was straight forward, you need to remove the three bolts holding on the rear spoiler, then carefully remove the two rubber grommets, and then undo the three connectors to remove the entire spoiler. There are two connectors for the camera, and one for the high level brake light.

Once the spoiler has been removed you need to undo the single screw that holds the camera in the mounting bracket, then ease the sides of the mounting bracket apart to release the clips. Eventually the clips will release and you can pull the camera out of the mounting.

As the camera cable is slotted between two metal skins in the spoiler, I tied a piece of string to the end of the connector to and pulled it through when I removed the camera. This should hopefully make it easier rethreading the cables when its time to reassemble

With the camera off, I carefully scored around the seal with a sharp knife and managed to split the two parts of the case to open it up fully.

Once opened I could see no evidence of moisture damage, and it was bone dry. I connected the naked camera back to the car, selected reverse and low and behold the camera was working again.

Carefully wiggling the connector and slightly flexing the PCB I could reproduce the failure, so I'm suspecting theres a broken track or a dry joint.

I'm going to ask someone in the hardware team at work to take a look tomorrow and see if they can find the actual fault and fix it. Hopefully reflowing the faulty joint should sort it.

Here's a few photos showing whats inside.

Notice the single 4 pin connector that the loom attaches to on the PCB

And lastly a shot of the connector at the cable end that connects to the car

Fingers crossed it should be fixed this time tomorrow.

Cheers,

Justin

Great news Justin.

In case it's still needed; I bought the look as it's separate from the camera there is an IP65 plug with the coaxial and the two pin power in one attached to about 15" of cable with the power and signal coax.

The coax is the same (albeit a FAKRA casing which you can remove) I.e. SMB. The 2 pin power needs swapping to put a 2010 camera into the 2006.

If i ever get home to a laptop I will do a write up!

Steve
