England 2003 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 V8 Giverny Green
Just joined the club

Hello all, after a 40 year motoring history that has included 3xRange Rover classics and 2xDiscoverys (TD5 still owned) I finally have my first fatty.

Despite modest mileage and a very comprehensive service history it's already got a healthy job list building up.

Full service
Coolant change
LPG service
Front tyres
Steering column adjusters
Strip and clean brakes (squeal on new pads/discs)
I've already picked up loads of useful info here and look forward to posting as jobs are tackled.

Welcome. I've also 40 plus years of motor vehicle ownership of which I have mostly done my own servicing/repairs.
OBD reader is a must if you intend to fettle it yourself.

Welcome...

I take it that is the BMW M62 V8 petrol on LPG (update your vehicle details and you will get an FF icon under your name, hover on it and it shows us what you have)

My advice is to get one of these for yours, makes a huge difference to the whole underbonnet area, runs so much cooler and helps to stop all the plastic getting harder and brittle, engine feels relaxed as well.....

Thanks for the welcome, profile updated, yes I have Lynx for diagnostic and thanks Pete I've checked out the thermostat kit although it will wait until I rebuild engine top end ( suspect HGF) Sad

Any advise on posting pics right way up, I couldn't seem to do it from iPhone.

Cheers

Mart

Only take pictures with the iPhone with it in landscape (ie sideways) with the volume keys at the bottom, then they appear OK... this used to happen a few years ago and apple sorted it with a software upgrade, now the upgrade before last messed it all up again... rather annoying... Thumbs Up Pete

Re possible HGF, here's the full saga.
I started up to leave work last Thursday and it was misfiring also got low coolant message and Trans Failsafe mode messages, switched off and re-starting was a real struggle, cranked for ages then eventually spluttered into life, the Trans message and misfire cleared but I was left with coolant message and EML. Went home carefully and misfire returned as I got there, opened bonnet and coolant was being pressured out of expansion tank. Feeling fed up I left it, went away in Disco for the weekend and examined it on return Sun pm. I carefully refilled the coolant with heater on full and 'burping' top hose, all went well and after cold check was topped up, no misfire that evening and local running about on Monday so I kept previously arranged A/C re-gas app. Tuesday I drained the plain water out of system and filled with mixed coolant, also cleared previous codes with Lynx ( misfire on no8 & Trans mode switch sporadic fault no longer present). Misfire returned in the evening Lynx shows misfires on 6 & 8, I left it to cool down and checked coolant, level ok and misfire + EML gone.
Perhaps I'm being paranoid after reading others horror stories and will certainly be investigation further before stripping anything down, after all it could be plugs/coils? also going to fit the thermostat kit.

Hi Dolphinboy, I didn't know what it was called but have always liked this colour combination, it'll look even better waxed & valeted, but mechanicals are calling first;)

These can be a pain to bleed, a small airlock will over pressure the system, lots of heat cycles and topping up should get there, doesn't sound like a typical HGF to me, I'd explore other options first, swap plug/coil to a different cylinder and see if the fault moves...

Also check battery, should be around 12.4- 12.6 volts 30 mins after switch off and somewhere near 14.4volts 1 minute after engine start...

Good luck, keep us posted... Thumbs Up Pete

Sorry about the delay in replying, I've been away on holiday with no internet! So to cover the earlier issues
1. The battery seems fine, good voltages when tested and started perfectly after 15 days standing, battery was new from main dealer last November.
2. Coolant level is stable.
3. I removed all plugs and cleaned them however they all looked good and the same for all cylinders. I also moved a couple of coils and still had sporadic misfire on same cylinders BUT the day after this ( just before hol) it stopped misfiring and has been fine since so I'm just driving it and enjoying it despite some torque converter judder!
I got sidetracked by a couple of other jobs that I'll get around to posting separate threads on.
1. Replaced a rear brake back plate by putting 1 cut in then bending it severely to fit around hub finally panel beating back into shape to finish.
2. Temporarily adjusted steering column to position I was happy with, reach motor mount broken so with under dash panel removed I held it in place long enough to activate switch with left hand. Reach screw had lock up issue so I slackened end nylock bolt got position I wanted, unplugged motor and tightened up.
Finally I have fitted a new Reg no

I wanted a single letter & number plate so got this that seemed vaguely RR relevant as the original press demonstrators from May 1970 all had NXC prefixes, sad or what?
