Talk to me about mini jumpstarters

I've recently been considering one of these jobs and they seem to good to be true. There is also a confusing amount of info regarding 18000 mAh's and 600A peak and lots of different variations. What does it all mean?

I need 1 to start my boat on occasions; 3.0 litre petrol engine. The guys that look after it have a habit of leaving the bilge pump switched on and it eats the battery.

I've got a couple on my wish list so can anyone with experience of these give some pointers.

I assume the boat isn't in the water ?

There's a thread here about power packs

What about installing dual batteries in the boat - that's what mine has - so I can isolate one, then just switch them over if I need to

The 1st looks identical to mine just different name and colours. I bought mine for my old discovery offroader. It would get left for weeks at a time and the starter was near enough dead but the little jump pack managed to start it. Sometimes it would consume nearly 40% of the battery though but it was being asked to start a 2.5l diesel Current

Alistair,

It sits in the water from May to October. I use a solar panel which, with a full battery, can usually keep the battery up to scratch. It's only when one of the boys, that look after the boat at their sea school, turns the bilge pump switch on, or the mooring lights, that it kills the battery. They're just not used to inboards in Greece and most of the hire boats don't have bilge pumps, just some sort of balancing system that stops them flooding.

We were in the UK for August, got back and went to the boat, battery as flat as a flat thing. Once charged and returned to the boat I immediately heard the bilge pump come on. Checked the dash switch and, sure enough, pump switched on Evil or Very Mad

I have to have the battery switch to on so that the cigar lighter can be used to charge through the solar panel.

Auto bilge works fine so why they switch it manually is beyond me......but this is Greece.

Thanks for the link. I'll have a mosey through that. 2017 5.0 Autobiography Supercharged

Had a good read through the existing thread and just ordered the Floureon T3 with the added air pump. Should be quite useful for pumping up the Donut.

Looking forward to never having to use it on anything other than a tablet or phone Mr. Green 2017 5.0 Autobiography Supercharged

The air pump is OK for topping up a car tyre, but no use at all for marine inflatables - you need a low pressure, high volume pump like this one

You're a braver man than me leaving it in the water - mine comes out every time I come home for more than a week - and I certainly wouldn't leave it there with a potentially flat battery.

Mine has dual bilge pumps - one on each battery - so as long as I flip the switch to a single battery supplying the boat electrics, the other one only has an auto bilge pump attached to it.

Like Alistair says, dual batteries on any boat which is left in the water are essential. Back in the days before the fun police ruined Windermere I used to have a mooring up there for my Ski boat. Solar panels didn't really exist back then so it was dual batteries with a physical switch isolator. 2 Bilge pumps (different height floats) off one battery and another battery reserved for starting.

3 things I would say about yours if I might be so bold.
1. Get a bigger solar panel (more output) 1 amp RMS is fine to leave connected all the time.
2. Add a fused, hardwired connection for it that doesn't rely on a cig lighter socket.
3. Fit a second battery with a marine grade isolator.
