How much would a 2010 model year engine and gearbox for a 4.4 TDV8 cost? Good condition used or new? MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Hi Graeme, I guess it must be a 2010 built 2011 MY then. I found it in NZ for sale and am looking if it makes sense to order the engine and gearbox (both are supposedly damaged due to water damage, although the car itself shows no submersion damage ?????) in the UK. According to the seller the parts list from the engine refurb place in Auckland came to 5000 GBP, but I'd rather not take any risk if I would start this project and get a refurbished engine and gearbox.

Not that I can do anything until I have actually seen it (end of Oct) anyway but just looking at the numbers.

If I could find a good engine (I saw a reconditioned one for 4500 GBP at a UK engine refurb place) and gearbox and ship them to NZ, I could get the car back on the road for less than the price of one in the UK !!! Then sell it and fund the shipment of my SC to NZ Smile.

The ad reads :
Crazy $10,000 Reserve on highest specification 2010 Range Rover Vogue in legendary 4.4 TDV8 Engine - this vehicle won numerous prestigeous awards for best SUV in the world! On road value is $90,000 - makes this an excellent project!

Only 73,000 km on the clock, I purchased it from Australia as part of insurance write-off only to discover that the engine and transmission was water-damaged and needs complete replacement.

There was no sign of water inside the vehicle at time of auction which leads me to believe that it was either professionally cleaned out prior to auction OR that water was deliberately introduced to air intake to damage the insurance for write-off prior to sale.

Vehicle owes me $45K and I've spend $3,500 to get SRS controller replaced with brand new part by LR dealer in Perth (after buying from auction) as well as another $4,000 at West Auckland Engine Reconditioners to have engine and transmission taken out for inspection. Final report was to replace both. I have engine and transmission numbers and my research shows parts available in UK Ebay for around around $5,000 GBP.

I simply don't have the time anymore to invest in this project. Would make excellent project, the L322 VOGUE is a rare breaker as well so a lot of money in the car obviously. I have all front parts in boxes but engine will need to be collected from West Auckland Recon.

Highest spec includes adjustable air suspensions, sunroof, adaptive headlights ($7,500 upgrade), rear entertainment units (factory upgrade $9,000), stitched leather all around with wood accents - simply stunning interior.

Inspections recommended. Happy to help as much as possible. Please no time wasters. Will need repair cert, compliance for registration - all paperwork and invoices will be supplied. END. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Eugene, that 4.5k recon price will be exchange so you need to factor in 2 lots of international shipping so you can return the old unit. Also, read the small print on the recon unit as most places require the exchange unit to be serviceable, i.e. not hydro-lock damaged.

Damn.

I am concerned what is wrong exactly with the engine and whether it (and the gearbox) can be fixed with 5k GBP. I don't like the sound of it. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

It does sound like a lot of hassle. If it was easy the guy who has it now would have done it.

Have to agree it sounds like a lot of hassle and if it was only 5k to repair it well it would have been done I guess think I would miss it out

In 2013 I was quoted £11,000 for a franchise dealer to fit a new 4.4 BMW petrol engine to my last 322. It wasn't worth it. I didn't fancy a refurbished one, so bought my current car instead.

The NZ car may well be more trouble than it is worth, but your starting point could be asking Dan at Duckworths for prices of an engine and gearbox and checking shipping/import costs to NZ. Only Range Rovers since 1988

how do you water damage a gearbox? its a sealed system.

the engine could have hydrolocked on water when fording a deep river and that would not have damaged the cabin.

Sounds like a real ball ache though to get it all shipped, fitted and coded to work. Probably best left alone. Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

The gearbox has a breather though which water will be drawn in if the gearbox was not as cold as the water when submerged.

If the engine has been drowned then all the cabin internal wiring connectors probably have also been submerged which will lead to failed electrical contacts forever, being the main reason why vehicles get written-off if submerged long enough for water to get inside. If the vehicle was to be resurrected then getting insurance for a vehicle written-off due to water damage is likely to be difficult, if not impossible, let alone a buyer.

I would leave well alone.

It'll be a nightmare to pin down the costs of getting it fully back on the road and, even then, you may find it will be worth nowhere near what you expect and probably very hard to sell on.

Once you start you may find it would have been simpler just to take some cash out of your bank and burn it. At least that would keep you warm.... 2021 D350 Fifty Edition - Carpathian Grey
