Hi,

I've got a TDV8 (2007MY) and I only have one key.

now I had a panic the other day when I washed my one and only key in the washing machine! arghh. to my surprise, it still worked after (put it in some rice).

It got me thinking that I should really have a spare though. So what are my options? I know i can get one from a dealer for 200 quid or so, but will a specialist sell me one cheaper?

Can I get one off ebay and get it coded somewhere? an automotive locksmith maybe?

Keys for your car are GBP125 from Dan at Duckworths and there are instruction on here to sync the keys without paying a dealer to do it .
Just give him your VIN when you get in touch and he will give you instruction on how to pay .

As an aside I think Land Rover quote that their keys are waterproof to 3 metres or some such 2008 MY Supercharged

Just my 2p, and I know it's not always the case, but blank keys bought over the internet can be made from all sorts of strange mixes of metals.

Having a bit of industry knowledge with a Master Locksmiths and Security Specialists business who supply and cut keys for many of the major motor manufacturers, the key machine used to cut some of the keys cost in excess of £20k and key blanks of unknown origin with below standard metal can wreck the cutter in a few seconds, so many businesses will not cut a key from a blank you supply.

The more expensive bit is when a dealer has to code the key to the car, as you can imagine it's not economically viable for a locksmith to have all the different software and interface leads for all manufacturers. What can happen with some manufacturers is that a locksmith can obtain genuine OEM blanks and the electronics be transferred from an existing key fob, if a key is broken or worn.

Also it may be possible to get a key cut to code and posted out, but you will need the code from the dealer and proof of ownership etc.

I know they tend to be a bit on the pricey side sometimes but the infrastructure and equipment required to support the current key technology is not simple and beyond what a shoe repairers can offer.

When I had my Disco 2, I only had one key. The locksmiths cut me another but the dealer would have needed to code it. I didn't bother with that bit, knowing it would only open the car and set the alarm off, but at least I would be in.

I asked one LR dealer for a price and they suggested I had the only key I had on a chain around my neck and kept it very safe.  2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Does the remote unlock/lock work?

Before things get too muddied here the, OP asked what are his options for a NEW key not how to make a flip key from and older BMW key am I right ? in which case a new key has to be ordered from a dealer. No specialist can make a key because it needs the coded transponder in the key to make the ignition unlock and turn , blades can be cut and fobs can be made to unlock the central locking but without he transponder from Land Rover nothing will start . 2008 MY Supercharged

I'm in the same situation really, I've only got one key. The ONLY way to get a second key is to buy from a dealer?

With regards to keys, there are a few options.

The transponder of each key (very small black thingymedoo in the key housing) is the most "critical" bit. That transponder needs to be matched to the VIN of the car and once you have received it, it needs to be "matched" to the car. This can be done with a Faultmate (I did that myself with a brand new dealer key) or T4 Testbook (dealer / LR laptop). That is why if you only have one key and need a second, the dealer or Dan at Duckworth are the only options.

If you have a mangy old key (as I did), then there is the option getting a nice key online or via Daveo who orders them in batches. By taking a transponder from an old key and putting it in the new key, you make it work in the ignition.

For opening and closing the doors etc. both the dealer keys and the "web" keys work bearing in mind you still have an original key to start the synchronization process.

So if you only have one key and want to add a second key, the dealers or Duckworth Dan are your only options. If you want to replace an old key or replace an old model key with a new model key, the web keys can work. I have done that as well with a key from one of Daveos batches.

OK, I went into a key cutting shop thatalso do car keys. He said he could program the transponder, so it would work in the ignition, but it wouldn't remotely open the car. So can I get one of these keys and then program the. Key to open the doors?

Paul mine is a 2003 Vogue but like I said look up daveos threads on this forum he has all the info he even has a video how to program the keys for locking an unlocking the doors 1994 softail full stars n stripes custom harley davidson

paul r Your key guy must be talking about a BMW based car yours is a TDV8 and as such is some times referred to as Ford based either way you must order a key through a dealer via your VIN number THERE IS NO OTHER WAY TO GET A KEY THAT WILL START THE CAR .
ebajema explained it all very well and unless you want a key to just open the doors don't get distracted with options for people who have old keys .
These keys are made coded to an individual VIN and are not coded later later by a dealer all the dealer does is synchronise the remote central locking but if you have one good key already you can do that your self .
