United Kingdom 2013 Range Rover Autobiography SDV8 Luxor
First post and new prospective owner

Ok, just finding my feet on this forum!

I'm set to collect my second hand L405 on Saturday from the dealer in the Midlands. Obviously I'm very excited and hoping beyond hope it is as described and in decent nick. I'd hate to get there and find it's not quite as described or has some annoying problem that makes me not want it...

It is an SDV8 Autobiography, 13 plate in Luxor with Almond/Espresso interior. I have two young kids and although this will be my car, we'll be using it for family trips out at weekends etc. So the Almond made more sense than Ivory (and I think it goes better with Luxor).

I nearly pressed the button on a new RRS about 18 months ago but we sensibly decided to buy a new house instead (ok, a bit more money!) and I've had the itch for a RR in some form ever since. Well, it's my 40th birthday on Sunday so my wife and I decided I could treat myself Smile

So... a big question - is there anything I should look out for when I'm inspecting the car before handing over a ridiculous wedge of cash? I'll be looking to make sure all the extras and electronics work including soft close, auto tailgate etc. What should I be listening out for when taking it out for the test drive? Windows up or down?

Help! (and thanks in advance...)

Get it up to 2,500 revs and check how much blue smoke it blows out.
If it is bad, insist on the turbo oil pipe mod before parting with your cash.

I'd check the conditions of the warranty, if you have to return it to the supplying dealer then it could cost you a lot... You haven't mentioned if it's a franchised dealer or independent or if it has a JLR or third party warranty... Thumbs Up Pete

Thanks Baltic Blue - that's really useful and I'll be checking that out. Not sure how much is "bad" but I'll make a fuss if there's a noticeable amount pouring out.

Haylands - good point and I should have been clearer. It's from a JLR franchised dealer (Hunters) and it's an Approved Used car on the JLR website/network. So it benefits from the 2 year Approved Extended warranty.

Only downside is my two nearest JLR dealers are absolutely shocking. We've had a couple of LRs (Disco & FL2) and have no good words to say about them - apart from the free soft play area for our kids! So I'm actually thinking of using an Independent LR specialist who has access to the JLR systems and can maintain the online service record etc. He's said he can do JLR warranty work directly as well as servicing.

Anybody with experience of using an Indy for JLR warranty stuff?

Edited to add:

Ok, things to check list so far is:

1. Dual view headphones (I'm assuming this should be there since it has DV!)
2. Rear loadspace cover - don't think it has a boot liner but I'll be getting one
3. Tool kit, spare wheel (spacesaver), rubbish LR jack
4. Sliding roof & blind works
5. Entertainment inc TV works, USB sockets etc. all fine (I will take a memory stick to check)
6. Suspension and ride height settings fine
7. Surround & rear cameras all work ok
8. Every seat moves properly and heated/climate seats work fine (and massage on fronts)
9. Check all interior lights
10. Check for blue exhaust smoke at 2500rpm
11. Climate system generally (& aircon cold)
12. Soft close on all doors & auto tailgate

Running checks whilst moving: ACC, HDC, Low ratio, paddles...

Anything else?

Nice!

Can't wait for the Wife to finally agree to upgrading and buying a L405.

Just need to twist her arm a little more.

The arguments I used were:

1. I've always wanted one and I deserve it (this one actually worked but YMMV!)
2. It's safer (TBF, I was going from a 911 but you could argue safety standards have increased)
3. It's more relaxing to drive leading to lower stress and no risk of road rage
4. It's perfect for transporting the family on long journeys (again, this might be a harder one for you!)
5. She had the car she wanted already
6. She liked the colour Smile

Good luck!!

Well, I enjoyed the trip back home at the weekend from my parents'. It was a bit of a struggle leaving it at Stansted Meet & Greet for two weeks while we went on holiday, but a pleasure to collect from them last Saturday!

The journey back home to Scotland on the Sunday was pretty good - plenty of opportunity to test out the 4-zone climate, massage seats, audio and ACC. I have to say I love the adaptive CC best of all - it makes motorway driving and queues a breeze!

So pleased with the colour too - both inside and out. A friend has a new Jag with something close to the ivory interior and that would just not cope with two young children IMO. At least not mine! The almond option also blends better with the paint colour, I think.

No privacy glass which I might sort at some point, but otherwise it has everything I'm after. Doesn't seem to have the TPMS tyre valve caps though... are these easy to get aftermarket as I assume it has the electronics for it? Also noted I have the remote heating fob but I didn't think it came with remote heating, so I'm a bit confused!?
