You are supposed to calibrate them, I've changed all four on mine and been a bit lazy and not calibrated it and it's not far out...!!!
You don't "have" to disconnect the battery but it is good practice... be careful with the plastic plug on the vehicle loom, they get brittle and the little locking clip can break off, if it does happen a well placed cable tie can hold it on OK... you also need some cable ties to secure the wiring back in place...
Just make sure the arm from it is the right way round, you can flip it over, take a pic of it before you remove it...
You can do it with the car at off road height with the wheel still on but leave a door open and I'd put a axle stand under it just in case... Pete
