Mobile phone networks

Chaps, I'm after getting some views on the various networks please.

Currently with Vodafone which is expensive and reliability of services other than voice is poor. Basically what I find is that way too much of their network is still 2G with no data connection and that impacts on stuff like Whatsapp, Skype, Navigation etc. I use all these quite a lot due to having friends overseas and I like Google maps for the traffic information.

Anyway, I have looked at 3, EE and O2 but all their sales blurb says much the same thing. What I need is some real-world experiences.

3 phones and 1 mobile broadband thingy. Need about 25gb of shared data a month based on the last 12 months.

Thanks in advance

Dom

I'm on EE on PAYG on my Blackberry Leap. £25.00 per month for 1000 mins 4GB of data and unlimited texts. It gets increased monthly by 500MB. I have the laptop tethered to it at work all the time and it never runs out.
Also have a BT Mobile at £20.00 per month 20GB data unlimited calls and texts. never runs out of data.
And as BT have now bought EE for the 4G network, it's probably the best option. I never have a connection problem, and can use BT's WiFi network when out, as i have a BT landline.
Hope that helps Thumbs Up Tony

Depends where you live / work.....

I put my family on 3 as we spend a reasonable amount of time in France & wanted the included data. We get reasonable coverage, but my sons school is a black spot.

Personally, I'd get a PAYG sim for each & try them out.

Ive just dropped my Vodafone contract at 20GB a month at £65 quid and changed to a 12 monthly contract.

I pushed and pushed and finally got the below:

30GB data
Unlimited calls and unlimited txt
Unlimited in Europe as well

All for £22.20 a month.

Bargain but Vodafone coverage is ok with me but their customer service skills are shocking. Range Rover quotes.....

I'm with 3

600mins + an additional free 2000mins 3 to 3
unlimited text
unlimited data
4gb tethering

all for £18 but its is a sim only deal, I'm not bothered about having the latest flashy phone every year so tend to just buy a half decent phone to last Current

I changed to 3 but only lasted a couple of months as the coverage where I am down in Wiltshire was abysmal! Changed to Vodaphone and paying about £20 a month, similar to Realist, and I can now get coverage at home where I never could before.
Strange thing is when I travel through Newbury on the train (The home of Vodaphone) I lose the signal!

I've stayed with EE after an aborted attempt to move to Virgin and suspect I'll stay with them as they have the best UK coverage overall and certainly for the areas I frequent.

EDIT: Oh yeah. iPhone 6sPlus, u/l calls & texts, 03 & 08 numbers included in calls, 5gb per month is £38.

With 3. All four of us in the house are and get free unlimited mins to each other.

SWMBO and me have new iphone 6s's unlimited text and mins plus 2GB 3g (normally 4g in built up cities automatically) for £45 pcm each. 12 month contract.

It has to be said coverage is excellent. all of us have been on 3 for a few years now and never had any issues.

Our lads have unlimited mins and texts plus 1GB data for £10 pcm each.

It depends on where you live. I live in a hole in coverage from all the services. 4g at 20mbps 100 yds away, but service can be patchy in the countryside

But in general EE works well for me and when I was in London last week I managed to get 120mbps on 4g. Package wise I'm on EU calling, 20Gb data, unlimited mins and unlimited txt, for some daft amount per month as I had an IPhone 6. But I never run out of data and will be getting a cheaper package next time.

You can also get euro data for £3 a day when abroad, which works well enough. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Ditto 3, I've been on EE/Orange, O2, and Voda for both company and personal use.

I'm now with 3. As a passenger on trains and in vehicles they seem to have he best coverage of the travel network and I get 600mins, unlimited text and data with 5gig of hotspot for £25 a month on a monthly contract.

Been with them over a year or more now and can't complain. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

This is great info chaps, thanks loads.

The thing for me is that Skodafone simply haven't upgraded their network in ages. There is still loads of dead spots and even more 2G areas where Skype doesn't work. I use this a lot and with a big commute I use that time to deal with calls, quite a lot to the USA and Switzerland so I don't want to be making these calls on the PSTN. Has to be data based.

Looking at the options I think I'll give 3 a go on a one month contract to see how I get on. If that works out OK I'll move the lot over.

Thumbs Up

I had patchy coverage at home with 3 - only a couple of rooms - I exaggerated a bit Whistle & they gave me a thing to plug into my router to get a perfect signal in the house.

I doubt they'd do that for a 1 month contract, but I'd switched 4 phones across to a 12 month contract Thumbs Up

When we were in the UK/Europe in 2014, we bought 3 network SIMs for my wife's iPhone 4s and my Samsung Galaxy.

Service was absolutely abysmal in London and down the coast to Lands End and back up to Bristol. For example, we had service in Southampton but not in Hythe nor New Forest. My wife couldn't contact me at Beaulieu when I was at the museum and she was walking the gardens. We couldn't even get service in a 3 shop in London!

I note the OP mentions there's still a lot of 2G in use - at least the old L322 Vogue on board telephones will still work (unlike here where the 2G network will close at the end of the year so I'll have to do something else when in the car Sad ) Ron B. VK2OTC
