Rough idle and hesitation with Nissan X-trail petrol 2.5 eng

Hi all,

Just hoping for some help with an issue that I have not been able to trace yet. We have a Nissan X-trail here in Malaysia as our daily runabout. It has been fine sofar at some 100k kilometers apart from some rough idling (almost like it is going to stall but never did sofar) and some hesitation at speed (minor) and hesitation when accelerating (especially from idle).

Once you floor it, it runs smooth. The hesitation is sometimes there and then gone for days/weeks/months. I have checked everything I could think of but can't find it. Since we are leaving soon and want to sell the car, we want to have it sorted and not have it break down during test driving or with the new owners.

I looked for vacuum leaks, spark plug issues, fuel issues etc. etc.

There seems to be a (weak) correlation with the fuel tank maybe maybe pulling a vacuum (tank cap ??) but not a strong correlation. I will keep releasing the fuel cap every time the problem presents itself but am hoping that someone can help me here. I have been trawling X-trail forums but nothing came out of it sofar..............

Cheers,

Do you have anything to plug it into?

If you have fuel and spark then you are most of the way there. Is there any way to test the MAF sensor?might be worth giving it a clean see if it improves things.

Without a code it's difficult to pinpoint, but of its probably a sensor somewhere which isn't reading well at the lower end of its scale and hence why it's ok when revved a bit.

Just my 10p worth could be totally wrong..... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thanks NMJ. Unfortunately I haven't been able to plug it into anything yet but my next attempt is going to do the learning sequences for accelerator pedal, throttle valve closed position and Idle Air Volume.

The engine has been replaced on this one according to the registration papers and apparently every time you disconnect anything related to this, the relearning should be done. I'm not sure it is going to work but it is one option I found on an Xtrail forum.

The crank and camshaft sensor are also mentioned as potential issue causers and I have replaced the camshaft one without any improvement. Still need to do the camshaft one.

The problem is the transient nature of the issue, it just keeps disappearing and coming back. It can be gone for weeks/months although it seems to have gotten a bit worse.

I even opened up the throttle body unit to see if there was an issue there (throttle position sensor is indicated as a potential problem cause) but all seems in perfect shape.

Will keep you posted on findings.

I don't want to go to the dealer here because I'm worried they will just start replacing parts at random like a lot of garages seem to do these days........... MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
