DVD Player not working

OK, I'm prepared to be shouted at if I've missed something obvious, but I've looked and can't see a posting re the following: New to the community, bought my first RR 3 weeks ago - 2008 4.2 Supercharged with RSE. DVD's loaded (not pirate copies, originals). When I go to the DVD screen the buttons 1-6 are all greyed out so I can't select any DVDs to play. I have removed and replaced the cartridge, checked that they are the right way up etc. The TV works fine on all three screens by the way.
Has anyone had anything similar or any suggestions? Do the DVD Players themselves fail?
Any help / advice would be appreciated.

Have you switched on the power switch in the roof at the front near the sunroof switch?

Thanks Dolphinboy. I had a look but the only switch in the roof near the sunroof looks as if it's something to do with the deployable steps (couldn't see / hear anything happening when I pressed it)? 2008 4.2 S/C, Zermat Silver, Grey Leather

When you turn the screens on in the touch screen you are selecting DVD input on the video/audio list aren't you ? Whistle

There is no power switch with factory RSE . 2008 MY Supercharged

Hi, yes, I'm selecting DVD input. There are 3 -what I think are indicator lights on the unit in the boot, DVD, CD and something else. Are these supposed to light up? 2008 4.2 S/C, Zermat Silver, Grey Leather

OK, your 2008 does not have a front power switch. You select the input from the touch screen and that brings it on.

The first test would be if you can you watch a DVD on the front screen? Car should be running and gearbox in PARK. That will tell you if the actual DVD unit works or not.

I know that Thumbs Up but I'm trying to stop the thread getting cross threaded with information about other models/ dealer options being added and keep it specific to the OP's car . 2008 MY Supercharged

I had a similar problem with my 2007 SC. My car's previous life to me was a guy who never used it, headphones still in wrapper and batteries leaked. Anyway I wanted to get it going. I cleaned up headphones of leaked battery gunk. All good there. Then in with some discs, following instructions in the book. All worked fine till we headed out on a journey with caravan in tow. Not long after it all stopped.

Upon return home from two week holiday I read some online stuff here and decided I'd have a look myself. I had the FFRR book so I followed the instructions to remove the unit.

I considered it most likely that the lubricant on the cassette mechanism had dried up and was no longer lubricating as it should.

I dismantled the unit partially and VERY carefully placing parts so as to simplify the return direction of reassembly. Being careful to cover the DVD reading lens, a light spray with nozzle tube to moving/sliding components. I think it was a dry lube silicon spray.

Put it all back together and refit it reverse of removal and test. All works fine now and hasn't failed to work ever since.

It is actually a crap antique system when compared with 2016 available stuff as kids now all use their iPads in place of this dinosaur RSE.

But it worked for me and may work for you. Obviously you take things into your own hands re warranty cover but it's not hard if you take your time and systematically work the steps per the book.

You could also remove the unit and send it off to an auto hifi joint to service it.

Good luck.

United Kingdom 2005 Range Rover Supercharged 4.2 SC V8 Bonatti Grey

sorry to jump on this thread.

Can the RSE be played through the speakers?

In my 4 month RR ownership I'm still to test the system but I know I only have one set of headphones, a remote, a ps2 with no controllers and a little wire type sensor thing popping out of the internal side of the B post. is the sensor for the PS2 or remote?

I have baby twins and a toddler, if it all works ok I'm going to have 3 of them wanting it watch it very soon. I know the words to most of the films my toddler watches so I'm not bothered if can get it through the speakers.

thank you pete, but that is way out of my comfort zone. if it is the unit, i'll be contacting an auto electrician who specialises in ice and getting them to do all that!!

On the touch screen page for rear entertainment there is a list of video and audio channels that can be played through the headphones leaving the standard list of choices on the normal page bottom row to be played in the front over the speakers . You should have two headphones I'm afraid, and we can't comment on the PS because it has probably been hacked into the aux video inputs and is non standard. 2008 MY Supercharged
