Huge variance in service costs

Got telephoned the other day by the selling MD to be reminded that the car is due a service next month.

2012MY 4.4TDV8 'B Service' = £634 (fine I thought).

Rang another MD and they initially quoted £790 for the same service Shocked Shocked

Asked them if they would price match £634. "We can do it for £712 would you like me to book that for you?" Rolling Eyes

I had a similar issue a month or so ago.

I know it's too far away, but may help with any negotiation - this is the only published MD price I could find and the ones for >3 years old aren't too terrible

Not sure who you have phoned but Land Rover in Ayr were pretty decently priced when I looked recently

That's incredible Alistair. Your Marshall prices show the major service at £419. Some £234 cheaper than the best quote I've had and a whopping £373 cheaper than another main dealer Shocked

So, called half a dozen garages today across the country and the best quote I could get was £634 with a main dealer. Most quoted well over £700 for this 'B' (aka) 'Insp II' (aka) 'Major Service'. Have booked it in with one MD who does a pick up and drop off service for £634 all in.

Marshall's published service prices as helpfully provided by Alistair's link, do come in at £419 as per the link but... apparently it is their version of the service and not the full on LR one. I was told it is really for out of warranty cars. Therefore, doesn't quite cover all the things that the MD service is meant to.

Thumbs Up

I'd be going to a good quality local independent - as long as its done to spec it won't affect your warranty, will save a lot of money, and I think in most cases you get a better and more personal service Thumbs Up

Rolling with laughter Did you ask them which vital pieces they leave out ?

90% of it is checks anyway - I'm sure they would change all the fluids & filters Whistle

Didn't actually say I was convinced! Laughing

None of the garages up here would accept the Marshalls price. One said too far away/ not discounting over £200 and as mentioned, one rang them up and concluded it wasn't a comparable manufacturer's service Rolling Eyes

And all for appearances sake of keeping those main dealer stamps in a book Yawn

Is main dealer servicing really worth it?

Say you keep the car long enough to have 6 services and an indys cost is say £200 cheaper each time, is it really going to affect the value of your car to the the tune of £1200?

I can't rate Team Valley Land Rover in Gateshead highly enough.

We've just cancelled the service plan on our AB that was through Taggarts and we're taking it to TV.

Which service is yours due? I asked them for the 4th, 5th and 6th year service prices for our car today.

4rd year - £330 odd
5th year - £312
6th year - £530 odd

(Don't have the piece of paper it's written down on to be exact)

MOT is extra at £45.

My sister lives in Newcastle so we go down on Thursday evening, have the car serviced on the Friday and then have a weekend away whilst we're at it. Newcastle is quite a nice place for a weekend away Smile

The Marshalls service plan conundrum is almost as difficult as trying to work out gas and electric billing!

Having been told by a Franchised LR Service Dept that they had contacted Marshalls and concluded that the Marshalls service was not in accordance with the official LR manufacturers schedule, hence would be no good for 'in warranty' cars (ours is in warranty), I rang Marshalls Cambridge last weekend. The chap there said something along the lines of they don't miss out or use different parts with the service it's just a Marshalls Service as opposed to an LR service. He advised that I contact LR warranty to clarify.

The inference being perhaps about branding. That it is a bit similar to buying a Skoda instead of a VW... Adidas '4 stripes' if you will Laughing

Do shop around for MOT prices.
I live in Warwick and my local tyre place (Protyre, Warwick) will do my FF RaRa for £29.95.

Just to resurrect this thread... what did you end up doing?

I've just bought an SDV8 AB coincidentally... from Hunters in Derby so won't be going back there for servicing given I live West of Glasgow. Having used both Taggarts in Glasgow I certainly won't be availing myself of their offer to fleece me without the benefit of any sort of customer service.

So the question I have is whether Monarch's in Glasgow (for example) can still do work under the LR warranty or would my warranty be affected? They're claiming it's provided my AA anyway and they can link in as they need to for warranty work.

And what happens when I want to extend the LR warranty in 2 years time?!

Sorry for jumping on this thread but it's pretty relevant to what I'm pondering at the moment...
