Replacing transmission sump gasket

When replacing the transmission sump gasket do you need to use a sealant of any kind? Looking at mine someone appears to have black sealer.

Cheers

James

Nope,

Did my wife's two weeks ago, without sealant. No leaks at all now, it had been p155ing out as the monkeys who installed the refurb box for the previous owner had overtightened the bolts, crushing the gasket which then split.

Driveway still looks a mess though! Any tips for getting oil out of block paving? Rolling Eyes

When you have it off check it is level and not distorted, they can swell around the holes if some buffoon has been at it...

Then with new (genuine ZF) gasket tighten to...

Sump pan bolts....7lbf.ft 10nm

Sump drain plug.... 18lbf.ft 25nm

Filler/level plug....26lbf.ft 35nm

Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Pete

Tar for the reply. I used swarfega driveway cleaner on mine, seamed to work quite well when combined with hot water and a stiff brush.

If a buffoon has been at it, would it be wise to use sealant then? I have all genuine zf bought from jpat. Am changing the wiring harness for the oil temperature sensor too, think it might be called a valve body harness.
Looks like the filler plug has been taken off before by a buffoon. All other bolts look OK but I have some gibbs brand penetrative oil to dose them in first anyway.

Virtually impossible to get it to seal with sealant, the autobox oil tends to eat most things and it will leak eventually unless you use a polyurethane sealer like tiger seal, in which case you will have a job getting it apart again... You will also have to fit the sump, then leave it a day for it to harden before filling...

Personally I'd have a go at straightening it or get a replacement...

Don't forget to make sure you can get the filler plug out BEFORE you drain the oil... don't take it all the way out though or you will get a facefull of oil...

I take it you have read about how to refill and the temperature you need the oil.... and that you are using Mobil LT71141 as that is the ONLY oil that will work...?? Pete

Thanks for the feedback. Yeh I have read up on the oil, got my shipment of mobil this morning, just waiting for the mini pump to arrive and get a new t27 bit and am good to go. Fingers crossed they haven't used that tiger seal on the sump though. The place I bought the vehicle from said it looked like it had a new transmission on it but there was no paperwork to confirm that. I suppose there might be a date stamp on the transmission somewhere.

Run into a snag. Looks like pan has been off before and one of the pan bolts has either corroded or been rounded off so the t27 bit won't grab onto it.

Anybody have any suggestions on the best way to get the bolt out?

I have had to get bolts out of things before and used different methods of penetrative oil, heating them up with torches and drilling them out but I will probably ruin the threads if I do that with this.

're your question on removing oil from your driveway,I read somewhere that using Head n Shoulders shampoo, brushed onto it and left for a while before rinsing off.Sounds daft and I've not tried it myself but its worth a try. Thumbs Up
