Buying First RR

Hello all!, getting rid of my company car next year and looking at buying a l322 Range Rover preferably a vogue undecided on engine size yet. Budget is about 6-8k and leave 2-3k set aside for repairs.
I've read up on all the wiki and just have a few questions if any of you can help.
1, If the gearbox hasn't been replaced and it's at about 100,000 miles will it just be a matter of time?
2,Car will mainly be used for short journeys 2-3 times a week, will a trickle charger avoid the electrical issues this may cause?
3, Is there any garages you could recommend for work in my area?
4, Is there a difference in reliability between the 3.0 and the 4.4?

Hope this is the right place to post and thanks in advance

Welcome along! Thumbs Up
Your engine choice options are a bit confusing. The 3.0 is diesel and the 4.4 is petrol in the older cars, so are you unsure of which way to go fuel wise?
Or do you mean 3.6 and 4.4 diesels in the newer cars models? Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Hi thanks for the reply, no I'm aware one is diesel and one is petrol, I'm just unsure Of what to go for really I think it will depend on what has the lower mileage or better service history. Fuel consumption isn't really an issue as I won't be doing many miles.

You should really drive one of each as they are very different.

I found the TD6 to be truly gutless & awful - but many have been very happy with it. It also seems to have a weak gearbox - but not all have issues, there doesn't really seem to be a predictable pattern.

If you're not doing too many miles, then I think the 4.4 petrol is a better car - but just my opinion.

Either way, I'd change all the fluids as soon as you buy it Thumbs Up

As per Alistair, drive both, different vehicles IMHO. I have had TD6 and TDV8 and prefer the TD6, horses for courses as they say. If I was in your position I would buy the best petrol you can find Thumbs Up

I'm amazed that you found the TD6 better than the TDV8 Shocked

4.4 thunbs up from me.

Gearbox - just get the fluid changed completely and the filter - I think many of the Chelsea Tractors that are only looked at twice a year with sealed for life gearbox, sold on and the box dies at 100K. Scared by the cost of a box from LR, price up a reconditioned one including fitting.

Find a nice one, get an AA warranty any problems and you are covered.

Oh and I have had 7 months of short daily work runs with a few long distance towing weekends. Did an engine oil change last week the golden oil was starting to go brown after 6 months and well within the 10K recommendation, perhaps early oil changes may be the way forward also?

Can't remember for sure I think it was several 1000s from LR and around a 1000 from an auto box place (Gloucester Road Gearboxes Bristol), probably a bit more for VAT

Go for the 4'4 petrol if you are not doing many miles, get someone who knows to look at one with you .After purchase get some diagnostics on it to see any potential problems.Check dates for radiator, gearbox cooler and wether transmission oil has been changed as a matter of urgency.Enjoy your drive !
