There are three pipes that run to the thermostat manifold that the oil cooler is fixed to, the thermostat is used to warm up the oil first, then cool it if it gets too hot, it allows water to flow different ways at different times dependent on heat, removing it will result in the three pipes fighting each other and probably won't work....

I get trade at a local motor factor so got most of the bit's there... Island 4X4 are usually amongst the cheapest to get the parts though... Pete
