Gas fitting experience.

Just an experieance to share.
Brought my 4.4V8 in 2011 with prins already fitted
Issues i had since ownership was fuel pump failing.
Switching to petrol unexpected
Switching to gas then back to petrol for no real reason
wiff of gas

I booked it in for a service and found an LPG anorak who knew everyyyyything about the system i had.

now dont know the tecnnical bit but.
had the pump changed...in fact new seals fitted
new pipes in a few places
software update
some black boxes that were hardwired are now not, so if they fail i can just unplug and fit a new one.

I waited for 3.5 hours for all the work to be done and you know when someone knows what they are doing when they are already thinking of the next stage in the process as they have done it so many times.
Thankfully i was praised on the quality of the fit, and bacause it was a high quality fit he managed to do the work while i waited ( and had a chat and drank his coffee)
Noted was that there was custom brackets for everything. Anything LPG related had a bracket made.
as the tank took up the spare wheel well the pump was removed from its housing and a custom box made and secured using vibration pads with sound deadening to the nearside inner wing
Alllllll wires had been secured correclty and very neat.
Details that only a good fitter will know...twisting of wires to reduce heat damage being one...the list was endless
I hear of some bad installs and im happy....knowing nothing about the quality fit of an LPG convertion before buying....that i have a well fitted system....

I was also educated
My fuel pump failed because i was letting the petrol got to low (as it cools and lubricates the pump) if his happens do not go to JLR!!! they wanted £385...so as i know BMW engines very well i just got one for the X5 4.4..same unit £150 (GFS) ans fitted it in under an hour.

switching from petrol to gas and back again was bacuse the temp at which it was set to switch was to low...its been changed and not a single problem.

Best feature
Fuel pump failed and car would not start, thankfully i was on my drive so no issue, but if my wife was out in the car or if i was, in the middle of some place and the engine wouldnt start because of the fuel pump...not the end of the world but it would be a right pain in the bum...
so as part of the update a sequence was shown to me so that if the fuel pump did fail then i can start it on gas.... cool

a good tech will listen and hopefully explain some of the issue you have and educate you on how or what to do.

Oh, in passing i said" it sounded like a blow off valve" under the bonnet and a little smell of gas....straigh away he pointed out the pump and the diafram (sp). once stripped we could see it was warn and had a small hole.

Again all this was done with me watching and at same time having a likeminded conversation about engines and car "stuff"

Just so you know, it's a vaporiser not a pump, it converts liquid LPG into vapour, that's why it has heater hoses connected to it... there is no need for a pump in the system as the pressure in the tank ensures it gets to the front of the car...

Nice to know you have a good installation I've seen some terrible ones over the years.... Thumbs Up Pete

Haylands...Yes i stand corrected, couldnt remember what i was TBH.

Just did a search for the place that did the service and it was

When my pump failed last week the RAC bloke started it by spraying gas into the air box. Once it fired it turned to LPG almost immediately.
What sequence was shown to you ? Just in case it goes again... Best Cheers

Hi frank
Im going have to check this as it many not be right...wrote it down but forget where i put it Confused
turn ignition key to first position
press and hold the gas switch button for 3 seconds and i think its starts to bleed
with finger still press on the button turn the key to start the car.

instinctively you press the gas with the left hand (if on the left), but dont forget your ignition key is also on the left.
