A few probs with my L322

Hi Everybody!
I am not a technically minded geezer and do not know a crank end from a window washer, so please be gentle. Sooooo......
I thought that some of you maybe able to help me and to expand on this thread that I had a couple of months ago....
http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic33600.html

Please, if you don't mind, let me list in chronological order, list my problems as they appeared on my 2002, L322 with 186K miles on the clock that I purchased in April. ( it was cheap and I don't mind making it good again )

#1 The reverse warning ( or front for that matter !) has never worked - I get a 3sec beep and the light flashes on the dash button.... and that's it. UNTIL last weekend when unbelievably, the beeps increased as I reversed toward a wall ! It has not worked since. Why ?
#2 The car started to hunt/judder/vibrate when sitting at traffic lights etc. It made in very uncomfortable with a 'rumble' that went to your tummy... not nice. And then that disappeared for 2 weeks and then came back with a vengeance Sad . I took it for a service and he fitted new filter etc and mentioned that some/a injector was failing but he didnt know which one(s) because 'it isn't bad enough yet' to tell.......?? I was all set to ring FastLine in Kettering, but....
#3 Coming home one evening I got the TRANS FAILURE PROG message and obviously thought it had something to do with the juddering prob. I coaxed it home not racing the engine etc in case I damaged something...
( I have since been advised to charge my battery, which I have done, and it maybe that I need a new one despite it starting first time every time because my charger show GREEN light until I open up the doors and the internal lights draw some power and the charger changes to RED once more Sad
However the TRANS warning appears to coincide with a need to change gear, now....
#4 I find now that I am unable to travel at above 30mph without going to over 3000rpm as my gearbox doesn't change up beyond 2nd (?) gear. A couple of weeks ago I did notice that as I was travelling along the rev counter would show a rev above 3500 as I was travelling, probably, with hindsight, the gearbox was possibly 'slipping' as it would in a manual gearbox when you did not select your gear before you accelerated....

The terrific juddering feeling has subsided when stationary, but apart from that I know my L322 is poorly and needs some doctoring !
Thank you for reading this and I hope that you can shed some light on the probs and who/where to take the car to have it back to its sublime best, nr Cov or Leic would be ideal.
Many Thanks . 'Knowledge Is Power'

Probably can help on a couple.

With the parking sensors you probably have at least one that is faulty.

Turn the parking sensors on by pressing the button and then get out of the car and put your ear right up to each sensor.

If you hear a faint clicking then the sensor is ok - you should find one that makes no noise - this will be faulty.

Below is a link to my "how to" to change the sensor - really quite easy.

The transmission problems do not sound good but before you do anything else get a diagnosis on it to clear any fault codes.

Hi, you probably need a new battery which should sort a few problems.
As regards the trans failsafe it sounds like the car is going into limp mode which will make it drive real lethargic, but a engine switch off wait for warning on dash to disappear and restart should bring the car back to normal for a while at least.
if you have no history of the g/box I would seriously consider getting it looked at ie drop the oil and check the filter for debris etc. At that mileage it has more than likely been refurbed at least once. My car has done 140k and is on it's 3rd g/box, although there are peeps on here who are still going at 180k on original. I think they are the exception rather than the rule.
but as has been suggested try the smaller and cheaper options first.
greg Thumbs Up

This thread might be of use then Wink

The battery can cause any number of other warnings, so if you think its getting on a bit, always worth changing - the FFRR is fairly fragile where batteries are concerned.

Beyond that, nothing sounds like a DIY job for you, so better to find someone who knows the cars well and put your trust in them.

Re parking sensors.
As Vogue Owner mentioned check for the clicking on each one as this can be a common fault, if none work also look in the near side rear cubby hole in the boot & check for signs of moisture (On my 2011 that's where module is, someone may correct me if yours is in a different location).
I had fault where condensation had damaged the pdc module that started with intermittent failings then packed up altogether.

From Coventry you will be about 90 minutes from Cam Tech LR in Gloucs... If drivable, it might be a worthwhile day trip out to find out 'where your car is at' mechanically Thumbs Up

update..

Thank you for your advice, but things have moved on slightly.
Firstly, my car has gone in to a fella with a diagnostic machine who lives locally. I hope that his machine does the job. I hope he has a BIG roll of paper in it for the 'failings' printout !!
As you have said, it does go into 'limp' mode after a few minutes, I think that it happens when I attempt to change up to the top gear. Then it pings and up comes the TRANS FAILURE PROG.
I have changed the battery as you advised me, but as I said above, it still pings ( because of the gear prob I reckon ).
Now then... ! Smile
I had to jump start my lads van the other day. On connecting the cable clamps, I touched something with a clamp and BANG/FLASH/CRACK , the loudest 'short circuit' ever!! My industrial sized clamp GLOWED oven-grill red !! It melted the rubber sleeve etc... 'Oh Censored ', I thought.... Anyway, I daringly turned off the car engine and hoped that the BANG had not killed my new battery..... I turned the ignition key and the car started up again ! Smile No battery damage. I backed the car out of the way ( as we decided to give the van a tow ) and as I was reversing I heard beep beep beep beep as I neared the wall ! I then drove forward and the FRONT sensors made the beep beep beep beep noise as I neared the van - and I have NEVER heard those work!... I drove back and forth JUST to hear the sensors at work !! It appears that the large short circuit event had jumped started the sensors back to life. Smile . It didn't last long! After leaving the car for a brew, 20 mins later.... NO beeps ! Sad
Now then... fathom that fecker out then ????!!?? 'Knowledge Is Power'

The parking sensors do exactly that! Very frustrating!!! A little tip, when you find the one that does NOT click... Change it with the neighbouring sensor and see if the fault moves... If not, first check the wiring sir Thumbs Up

At one stage my reversing Censored 's worked on an intermittent level, I found that they normally worked when it was wet, and then when they had dried out all went f.u.b.a.r. again Evil or Very Mad I then found that i had a sensor out on the back, and changed it for another one that I had, still no joy, changed that with the one next to it and it started working in the next door slot, so loom is duff. I've got a new loom....... but I haven't fitted it yet, as I have gotten so used to using just the camera, one day boredom will get the better of me... It sounds like it has other problems too. But i have read on here the early TD6's came with 18" wheels as standard, fitting larger ones makes them resonate/vibrate when sitting at lights - so has yours had big wheels fitted?

im sure you know, but there is a switch on the lower left of the upright centre panel, to disable and enable the beeps. just check the manual to familiarise yourself. i use it in traffic, as sometimes you get someone up your backside, or they are wet and are seeing a blob of rain. i think they automatically re-arm on new start-up of engine etc. and go off after 10mph etc.
sounds like you connected the battery up very wrong, to either get a full short accross it, or the other battery. or you connected them in series, and turned it into a 24v supply. -maybe a little less considering other batttery. sounds like you have been lucky so far. next time though, its red to red. or +red to +red etc
there is often a little sparking as you connect them. but only like flicking a lighter!
you nearly had a 500amp 'lightbulb' there.

FYI it is possible to short the positive jump lead on the stud that pokes through from the suspension, be very careful when connecting the + positive clip, I had a lucky escape with mine. The design of the whole system is
not user friendly and can lead to sparks and Big Cry

Why they insisted on hiding the battery is beyond me, what is wrong with putting it at the front of the engine bay? Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

diagnosis machine results..

Thank you JohnBoy, but no, I didn't know about the switch, I will take a look when I get the car back because......
I have had it on the diagnosis machine at a mates' mate's garage. The results were as bad ( I think ) as I feared, but I was prepared for it really.
So, first up the air compressor for the front n/s suspension needs replacing and he can do that job.
Secondly, it has shown which injector is failing and he will be able to sort that as well, I presume that causes the 'hunting'.
And thirdly, and I presume more costly, it has shown that the 'solenoid on gears 4 and 5 is failing on the gearbox'. He will not touch that but know of a garage in Leicester who specialise in Land Rover and Range Rover gearboxes and he has their number.
So, hopefully, The Doctor has given his diagnosis...
I just need to sob and pay Smile
But it was a cheap car and I was prepared to spend a few quid if probs occurred and upgrading, but....... Confused
PS The parking sensor issue can wait for more days ! lol 'Knowledge Is Power'

Long time for an update... Sorry

Hello to anyone who is interested. I did have THREE injectors replaced and that has made the engine run smoothly, thankfully.
The gearbox problem was fixed by The Mechanical Workshop in Narborough. They knew what they were doing, well, they did to an untrained eye like mine!
This is what they found when they opened up her gearbox.......
Apparently ( and this is copying from the invoice ) the converter had collapsed thus blocking the filter inside the oil pump which affected the pressure inside the gearbox which in turn took out 4th and 5th gear and intermediate clutch. It all came to a Fecking lot of money to fix... but what choice does one have ???? Rolling Eyes
When the lady told me the cost I asked if a re-con gearbox could be used, she said ' that IS the cost of a re-con ' !! Big Cry
I got over it, and now she runs well enough for a 14 yr old motor. She is a little thirsty though ! Sad
Thumbs Up 'Knowledge Is Power'
