Handbrake springs

Anyone got any tips on how to refit the top and bottom return springs ? Tried for half an hour with the top one whilst fitting new shoes and ended up snapping the spring Shocked Had to order some more from Land Rover for delivery Friday. Had a look in my 101 manuals but no hints or tips on how to easily refit the springs Sad

I tried shouting and swearing a lit in front ofvthe neighbours. That seemed make little difference.

Then I used some fine tipped mol grips whick worked.

I then cleaned all the blood off the brake shoes and adjusters. 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4

I don't remember struggling with mine.... I seem to recall that I put the springs on while the shoes were outside the slots then used pliers to pull the shoes carefully outwards and onto their seats... Maybe....

Springs go to the inside between the shoe and backplate

Thats weird - my springs were on the outside Confused If they went on the inside as per the diagram you wouldn't be able toremoce them to change the shoes Confused

Not looking to revive this old thread , but whilst checking for any gotchas before changing the handbrake shoes on my SC I stumbled across this thread ... so it’s possible someone else will too

Trying to put the top spring in place requires a fair bit of force as you’re also fighting the tension of the handbrake cable pulling the lever back . This and , because the fit onto the cable is pretty shonky anyway , led me to secure the lever mechanism into its closed position with a tie wrap , which kept the cable in place inside the lever piece and meant that refitting the spring was a doddle
I didn’t take any pics ,s but all will be clear if you are attempting this job . Pull cable out to the extent of its travel , hook the lever onto the cable and close so the nipple is pulled into the lever . Then tie wrap tightly closed .. don’t forget to cut it off before fitting the disc

The pic above of the shoes arrangement is actually upside down and back to front .. ..the springs are on the outside of the shoes 4.2 SC - sold , now bought back

Just a thought as I rebuild these brake shoes , I would agree that the springs should be on the outside of the shoes , but the pic shows that I may have them to opposite ends as well. They are quite easy re a video I watched when it comes to stretching the top spring in The bottom one would be my choice . So is the pic upside down as well.
I reckon so ?

The pic above your post dating from 2013 is upside down and probably reversed!

Adjuster goes to the bottom.

Agreed, when positioned correctly they are reasonably easy to install.

Remember to go through the EPB drive cycle when you have finished (also easy). L322 3.6 TDV8 Vogue. 07MY

Even better. Wink

The cable attaches into the hinged part, doubt that you could even get it down to the bottom of the assembly.

Did mine last weekend in a blizzard - even with all the stars and planets aligning, getting the top spring on still requires a great deal of force.

Just grab the spring with some strong side cutters and keep levering and pulling it until it goes into in the hole. The feeling of relief when it actually goes in is immense Smile

(And then you realise you have to do the other side...)
