Hi Dijit, is it noisy all the time, or only when the aircon is switched on.

Thanks gregdav. It quieten down when you turn it on and the clutch locks up, so I'm assuming it's the bearing it freewheels on rather than the front shaft bearing. Rehab is for quitters!!!

Forgot to say I took the serpentine belt off so I could try every pulley inc. idlers by hand and feel for play. I suspected it was the power steering pump as it sounded worse on full lock but it was immediately obvious the free wheel outer pulley on the aircon pump was a bit noisy. When locked up it was fine.

Can't help on the FF but I have has the freewheel bearing go on a rover 45. I bought a 2nd hand AC pump and swapped the pulley assembly/ freewheel bearing, as the AC compressor was fine on the car and was charged, was a bit of a challenge, not sure whether the location and work space would permit such a swap. Regards

Not sure on the tdv8, but usually there is a 10mm bolt to undo then once you pull theouter clutch off inside on the shaft there's a circlip, the free wheel pulley should then be able to be removed, word of warning, there are usually little washers or shims inside on the shaft, this is your distance for the clutch to be engaged and free wheel. If access is ok you can do this without a regas. If you can remove the free wheel pulley, their should be a number on the bearing, I know a lot of aircon compressors use the same items and until a couple of months ago the bearing for mine was around £50 mark, but now available on the bay for £16.

Thanks you're a star! Sounds pretty simple and no need for special pullers to remove or refit the outer clutch. Is the bearing it rotates on an interference fit or does it slide off easily? Rehab is for quitters!!!
