Making your power steering ligher?

Quote:

Hi I have recently brought a l322 td6. The father in law really likes it and now fancies one, but as he is registered disabled and only has the use of one arm he is worried about the steering being to heavy for him.
So my questio is can you add in an extra servo like a red roostwr that you can add to the td5 discovery and defender clutch system to make the clutch lighter. Could i do this on an l322 steering system or is there something else you can do?

The steering rack has a servo valve on it which I believe can control the amount of assist given. Its subtle but the steering goes lighter at very slow speed and firms up at higher speeds. I notice it on twisting a roads a bit.

I suppose in theory it should be possible to change the signal to it to tell it to be lighter. Iirc is a Pwm signal. The downside would high speed driving where the lighter steering could lead to potential instability. V8 or else ...

The Servotronic valve is controlled by the body Processor Module and so making the steering lighter or just light all the time would require rewriting the hardware's program , I don't know about you but I would consider that beyond what mere mortals can achieve , if you bypass the valve the system resorts to a failsafe function which is quite heavy but still assisted. 2008 MY Supercharged

I'm not sure that the system is closed loop in that the controller doesn't sense whether the servo valve is responding to the signal is being sent. if that were the case, then in theory you could intercept the control signal and replace it with one which gives lighter steering. no programming required.

Iirc, the early L322 model Rave manual describes the type of signal that is sent to such items in the description of operation sections. V8 or else ...
