Only other electrical thing to report is a couple of times a few weeks ago the alarm went off with car sat locked in bright sunshine. Never know what this might have been, a spider? Or not related in any way?

Have you checked the drain holes around the bottom of the windscreen area and the bulkhead firewall? If they aren't clear and blocked up from leaves then quite often water can build up and cause issues which disappeat when the water finally drains.

I'm talking about the holes that would sit below the wiper motor and brake cylinders etc. V8 or else ...

Yes, and the one drivers side under the wiper seems to allow water to just run down into the engine bay as opposed to down the tube. May have to have this all off to glue up and repair. The other two seem fine. .

Well, having behaved itself for four weeks, it did it again on the way to work on Wednesday. On the way home everything worked on start up then it died on the way home. On Thursday did much the same thing. Friday morning worked fine on start up but died on the way, but behaved itself all the way home.

Must be a damp problem, but I do not know what is getting damp? Possibly something either in front or behind the bulkhead?

If I get the time I'll have the dashboard off and have a nosey under there.... .

That's about all that's left Tim, will be easy to see if water has got in, there is a lot of unprotected bare steel behind there that get's very rusty with a small water leak...

Had the plenum chamber out today.

The centre drain on the scuttle has no drainpipe. It would foul the wiper mechanism otherwise Seems it just drains down the top of the plenum chamber until it meets the body by the air intakes then finds its true course to the ground. So don't think it is that. No signs of water runs into the air intakes.

Decided to stick a run of wide insulating tape (black) along the bottom of the windscreen and over the top of the scuttle, as this seemed simpler than taking the dash apart! Now I just need a heavy down pour

Will also try draining out the box section up above one of the fuel tank covers. You may remember when I was doing the brake pipes I got about a 1.5 litres of clean water come out when I undid one of the outer/lower bolts. Just wondering if this chamber gets too full it affects some wiring? But then it doesn't go anywhere so would happen all the time?

Have you considered any corroded earth points behind the dash?

Behind the dash is my next port of call, once I have exhausted everything else. Only a problem after it has rained, so water going somewhere, doing something, so seeking the source (a bit like Livingstone & Stanley ) .

We have only had a few prolonged showers in the Winchester area in the last few days, but my sticky tape solution seems to be working. I need to do a proper rain dance for the bank holiday weekend  .

Tim, Have you got the original or an old windscreen, mine was the original and when they changed it a few months ago there was a section at the top of both "A" pillars, about a foot long, where the bonding had failed and the screen had lifted, also had numerous other places where it had failed, you could see the dead areas easily after the screen was cut out as the cut areas looked new and fresh... if you have an old screen, maybe worth the small excess to get a new one...

Just for your info I asked Autoglass to see if I could have a genuine screen, they checked and the reply was no, because the FF was over 10 years old, they fitted a Pilkington one and apart from it being about 10mm too far to the passenger side (fitting error) which doesn't effect anything really, it's as good as the original and the auto wipers work fine... They also fitted two new side trims and a new bottom trim and it's £180 on it's own....  Pete

I'm going to have the dash up, and possibly check out that channel that runs under the seats (you showed it full of water after you went swimming and stripped your interior!)  .

If you take the alloy scuff plates off you can get you hand under the carpet enough to see if it's wet..... Pete

Well and truly flummoxed by this one!

Had the dashboard and dash ends off today, dry as a bone everywhere, even only slight sprinkling of surface rust on the tubular sections (and lost a torx socket down the demist vent ). Got my hand under the carpet on the passenger side (where all the A/V wires run), dry as a bone. Checked out both rear cubby holes and boot, dry as a bone. Undid the bolt holding up the tank cover on the passenger side, dry as a bone.

But something, after some proper rain, is being affected, not immediately, as it only happens some way into a journey, say 10 minutes, then leave the car for a day in the dry and all is back to normal.

Is there anything on the outside of the cabin that could be doing this? Why does everything work at first then it packs up, possibly motion? (Perhaps try just running the car stationary next time?)

Can't necessarily see the link, but this has only started happening since fitted a hybrid tv unit and a ulf bluetooth module. .

Thought this one was worth an update (9 months on)

Not had a problem since September/October 2016, the solution seems to have been the sticking of a wide band of black tape along the top of the scuttle plate where it meets the windscreen. I guess the sealant that is supposed to stop water ingress here has broken down. The tape, being black is not too unsightly, mostly obscured by the wipers, and well below normal sight lines. .
