I guess the worst that can happen is that you get a bill from GF for the recovery.

The fact that you recklessly drove a car with a known oil leak, that then turned fatal and asked them to recover you......

There was no oil light on when you re-started it - and when the light came back on, you didn't stop immediately, but chose to continue.....

You can spin the story either way around

By all means, try your luck with the ombudsman, but beyond that, be prepared for a fight that will cost time and money.
