Just got home towing the caravan and when I got out of the car there was a loud hissing from the rear nearside tyre.

Changed the wheel and inspected the flat one, four large splits in the sidewall near the rim with one leaking air.

Anyone else seen damage like this?

check the production date, it might be an old tyre cracking up.. ... - .- -.

Looks to be a bulge in the tyre up towards the G and the O, or is it just the camera angle... in which case it would indicate damage from hitting something fairly substantial... Pete

Have you been driving through any ruts......looks like that would slice the inner wall if there were something sharp in the rut.

Pinched it between rim and a kerb perhaps? Old tyre will show cracks between tread.

Speed bumps at speed? Especially the type that are not the full width of the road, as these will pinch the inside of the tyre. Worse on low profile tyres.

Looking at it again you can see between the two red arrows where the tyre has been squashed against the rim and wiped the dirt off...

I think the clean bit is where I have rubbed it when feeling for the escaping air.

Never thought about speed bumps, there are some down the road from me but the car hardly touches them when I go over them.

Tyres are not low profile and about 3 1/2 years old.

Car is in dealer later this week so will get them to inspect the other inner walls.

I doubt that it's tyre age, the cars only 5 years old, and as far as I'm aware they didn't come with Goodyear, so they must have been changed in the last 5 years  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

There appears to be a bulge where the weights are too. You didn't any one off while you were away did you? So much so that they would take a knife to your tyre......

Personally I never got on too well with the wranglers on my 19" rims, they would never balance up properly due to one of the tyres being poorly constructed!!

The coopers I have on those rims are now v good in comparison. I would get it to your local tyre dealer and get them to take it off the rim. Check the rim for true, bin the tyre, and replace the opposite side too. Very strange failure, but it does look like it has been squashed against the rim, maybe dismounting a kerb or similar.with the van on the back it shouldn't need a lot of added pressure in the tyres, just run them at load/speed pressure rather than 2 up pressure.

Away again in my van this week, and this has reminded me to go and put some air in the tyres!! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

^^ That rather depends on how the van was packed and how much was packed into it If your not careful it is possible to put a lot weight on the rear tyres without it showing too much, because of the self levelling nature of the suspension.... it's only the bulging tyres that give it away  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

indeed. you need 7% of the vans MTPLM on the nose, which is realistically impossible to judge and daft in larger vans. My van has a max weight of 1895kg which means that the nose should be 132kg. which is stupidly high and will damage the caravan. In reality a nose weight of around 90kg is sensible.

generally speaking you should work it out once and then stick to that loading pattern. A nose gauge comes in handy

Just looked it up and the max on my van is 100kg so at 90 its about right. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

We don't know what the load rating on those tyres is, all I was saying is it's possible to increase the rear tyre loads without realising it, cos the car don't drag it's butt when it's loaded, too much, which we wouldn't do would we

Yes it is highly unlikely, but as they say the picture is worth a thousand words.. and that picture is nasty There are lots of things to consider, has the OP had the tyre from new? has it ever been run flat? is it very old? has it had a hard life and just given up?

The picture would suggest that the tyre has de-laminated internally, which is normally due to prolonged running at reduced pressure, but that can also happen if the tyre was run with too much weight.. either way I'm sure that the OP would like to make sure that it doesn't happen again  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Took the car into the local kiwk fit yesterday and the manager had never seen anything like it, they put it up on the ramp and the other tyres were fine.

Pressure is just under loaded pressure as there is just two of us and a small dog with not much weight in the boot.

Tyres were take offs from LR and date code is 10/2012, never run flat or at low pressure, that have done 30,000 miles and I was looking at changing them soon anyway.

Van is 2000 kg and nose weight about 150kg, we tow about 8,000 miles a year and never had problems like this before.

There are actually four splits round the rim so unlikely to be a single kerb or debri on the road and I don't recall hitting anything or kerbing it.

Will have a look inside when new tyres are fitted, probably next week.
