Advice please – Fan Blower Problems - Again!

Would be most grateful for some advice before I spend another shed load on money on getting this problem investigated.

The car is a MY2002 RR Vogue that I’ve had for 11 years now and has only covered 60,000 miles.

After three replacement FSR’s and several hundreds of pounds spent on investigating why the Blower Fan was not working, my independent LR garage diagnosed terminal Blower Fan Motor failure and the car was booked in for a replacement fan motor to be fitted in Sept 2014.

£1,209 the poorer I picked the car up at the end of that month and found that perhaps because of the complexity of the work involved, the repair had actually been carried out by one of the LR Main Dealers local to me. It went straight back to them as the centre air vent temperature control had been incorrectly fitted.

This was rectified and all was well for about 10 months when the fan stopped working again. Back to the Main Dealers who this time checked the fan and cleaned and tightened the connections on the Heater Control Unit. Another £100.00 worth spent including £15.00 for “parts” (?).

The repairs carried out seem to have lasted about 7 months this time and I again have problems. The Blower works on starting the car but will stop after anything between 30 seconds and a couple of minutes. It may then work intermittently.

Is this likely to be a problem with the Heater Control Unit / Panel?, signs of a FSR problem or is the fan, barely 18 months old showing signs that it’s on the way out again?

I understand that a replacement Heater Control Panel costs something like £917.00 new but there are s/h ones on a well- known auction site.

Before I spend more money not finding the cause of the problem any suggestions as to the what to look for would be gratefully appreciated
Many Thanks Peter Kemp

Is it something I said? I did say please and that I would be grateful for any suggestions as to what the problem with the blower on my RR might be.

Can't believe this post has out foxed the combined wealth of knowledge of all the contributors to the forum that has been accumulated over some years! Bow down Peter Kemp

Well, as you say, the blower motor should be OK seeing as how you have replaced it, the issue therefore points to the control unit or the FSR. I am on my 4th FSR on my MY02 with original fan, but my symptoms have always been "just no fan".

In fact the current FSR (I will regret this) is a pattern part cheapo off eBay (£16) been working fine for + 3 years. I also have a spare at that price Very Happy

Best to try a replacement FSR first, then you know where you are with that part and can move forward from there. .

Hi Joe90.

Thank you for your helpful advice, I'll try the FSR as that's likely to be the cheapest starting point. I bought the car s/h and it was originally supplied to the first owner by Park Royal Land Rover. Among the bundle of documentation that came with the service book was an invoice for over £700 worth of work carried out shortly before I bought the vehicle. One of the items was " tested and replaced U/S FSR" It was an early sign of things to come.

Thanks again for responding Peter Kemp

I note your car is very low mileage. As above joe90 recommendations, also is your battery in tiptop condition, as these rr's are very susceptible to voltage, they will throw up all sorts of problems.
Just a thought.

Also possible they didn't put it back in properly, which would just cause it to blow again Embarassed .

Many thanks gregdav and Joe90 for the further advice.

I've had repeated problems with battery drain due to the old problem of water ingress into the rear l/h equipment bay. A lot of sorting out to do there including fitting the LR "Water Shedder" (plastic bag!) if I can work out which way round it is supposed to go.
Checked battery and it seems OK with good voltage at rest and when engine running.

I also wondered about the FSR not being properly secured in place. I think from other posts you need to feel and hear the click when fitting it to make sure its properly secured by the holder clips. I have fairly small hands so removing the trim panel and having a feel around to see if its loose is on the list to check out before thinking about before booking the car into the LR Main Agents for a third time.

Appreciate your help and thanks for responding Peter Kemp
