Driving on a piste /off road on snow

Hi,

I've got quite a specific task coming up that I could use some advice on, if anybody has any relevant experience of.

I have a L322 TD6 fitted with 20x? BBS alloys, the tyres are 275/45 R20 General Grabbers. So they've got a bit of decent tread to them but not specifically designed for snow.

I have to drive up a piste in a ski resort at a decent speed and I'm thinking I need some additional grip, chain's don't seem to be available to fit those tyres, so wondered if anybody had a recommendation.

Maybe downsize to an 18in wheel and tyre combo? Tyre socks? I'm not a complete beginner on snow, but the last time I drove on a piste was in a jacked up RR Classic with a very aggressive tread pattern.

Oh and if anybody has a 322 roof crate style rack I'd be interested in that and underbody armour. I'll be posting in the wanted section about those too Very Happy

LR do an accessory snow traction system part no LR005737 for front wheel use with 20" wheels and chains part no VUJ000020 for rear wheel use on 18" and 19" wheels. I have the chains but as yet have not needed to fit them. You could also consider studded winter tyres, I recall a contributor from Moscow had fitted them. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Thanks CS, I'd seen and considered those. They don't list the 275 width I need, but I'm wondering whether I just gamble and hope they'll work.

Studded tyres would be good, but I need to sort this in the next week and drive out there on whatever tyres I end up with, so the add on solution like you mention would probably be better.

you may have 275/45s fitted but the correct size is 255/50 20 so you may find some suitable tyres in that size.

Chains are available in the size for your grabbers have a look here

http://www.snowchains.com/4x4-snow-chains/...izeId=2817

though it really depends on how fast you are planning to drive up the slopes as chains aren't recommended on any car at speeds over 30ish. Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Seems like an unusual requirement - are you sure it's a piste - generally they're not compacted enough to take the weight to a car on regular tyres.

For most of the roads round a resort, regular chains would be fine - winter tyres & chains would be even better.

Studded tyres are out as you're not allowed to drive on tarmac with them - so unless you're changing tyres/wheels when you get there.....

Thanks guys,

Alistair - It's definitely a piste as we're renting it for something, you hit the nail on the head about the snow not being compacted enough. On the move I'm confident we'll be alright, it's just the initial part of any movement when it can dig in.

Northernmonkeyjones - Yup, I know my Grabbers are a bit wider, thanks for the link to those chains, I'm going to get a set of them!

And I'm getting three snow traction systems from Land Rover, that should work on the vehicles we'll be using. If this all comes off (there's a massive snow storm predicted for the day we're there), I'll post up the results with some pics Smile

Not sure which would be worse, gays on trays or a Full fat, suspect it would still be the snow boarders. letters not necessarily in the right order

Hi guys, as promised here is it what I needed to source tyres for. This was a project I produced for Jaguar in support of Graham Bell aiming to become the fastest man on skis.

We cut a track through a snowy forest in Austria in the end, as the snow on the selected piste in France wasn't hard packed enough.

I left my RR on the 275/45x20 General Grabbers and they worked fine, 2500miles in total. Great trip!

Thanks again for all the advice.

It looks like a summer mountain road covered in snow and used as a piste in winter. I was imagining an up/down wide piste. That looks like filming was a lot of fun. Thumbs Up
