Stone stuck in brake?

Hello All and good morning,

As the title suggests i think i have something stuck!

Saturday morning we had snow, real snow but that doesn't stop the FF. later that same day i started to get a grinding sound from the rear N/S but headed home and forgot about it.

Sunday morning i needed to head out for Mothers Day and the grinding sound started again only when pulling away from fully stopped or slowing down from 10mph downwards.

I've checked the disc and it is now marked and not smooth like the other 3 wheels and also there is little tiny metal flakes on the caliper.

I did head to the jetwash but it didn't work?

I haven't got a garage or a jack so im stuck! is my best bet Quick Fit?

Stan i jet washed it and did the forward and reverse but nothing.
The Wife used it this morning to go work and she said it was still the same no improvement.

The disc is defo hot to touch and its marked but only in 1 or two places as if there is a stone or 2.

May i ask what the repair bill might be if its the "dreaded sticking caliper"

I got mine from Dan - less than £100 for a refurbished unit +refundable deposit once I sent mine back.

Local Indi fitted mine - I did both sides together on the basis that if one went, the other wasn't far behind.

I think you might possibly have worn down the brake pad so that the metal backing plate of the brake pad is now rubbing on the brake disc. I would get it checked. Thumbs Up

to be honest nicedayforit, i can't see any brake on the pad, it does look like nothing is there. I really hope its the pads are finished or just a stone, cheap fix.

It could be just the pad worn completely down but I did once have a brake pad where the brake material simply tore away completely from the backing plate for what seemed like no reason. Same result, you need to get the wheels off and check. Thumbs Up

If it is the pads, and that seems most likely, then you may have a sticking calliper as well, there is a pad warning sensor on the rears and if that is not on then the pads have worn down unevenly which would indicate a sticking calliper..

If the disc is scored then it will wear out new pads fast, most likely need new callipers, discs and pads... Pete

Whistle There is a slight flaw with the brake pad wear sensor.... it's attached to the pad that goes into the piston... this is the pad that is least likely to wear if the caliper is sticking Sad I found this out last year, had 3 half worn pads and one down to the backing... but the bloody sensor said it was all ok Evil or Very Mad Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Finally home and had a look at the brakes as the Wife has been only able to update me by phone.

Basically the pad on the rear near side is completely gone!!!! Down the the back plate, there is no brake bit.
Checked the other side and I can see the pad with brake material.

I don't want the Wife getting ripped off when she dropa it off so shall I get her to say someone has looked at it already and advised it's down to the plate and that needs changing for sure????

I don't want some spanner monkey saying I need this and I need that etc etc

I'm afraid I would be very surprised if you didn't need new discs as well but it depends on how long you drove it with no pad on the plate Crying or Very sad 2008 MY Supercharged

Thanks axle,
The near side rear defo needs a new disc 100% as it's now rough and bumpy and the other side rear is lovely and smooth.

For now I was planning on new brakes regardless and new discs if the price was right as I'd have to wait till payday for the full job.

FYI if you are planning on keeping the car.... Kwik Fit give a lifetime guarantee..... ie. you only pay for one set, no matter how many you use..... most cars a set of pads will outlast ownership.... but if you tow, carry heavy loads, etc. you can go through brake pads like they are made of butter, and something like this should be considered.... when I was towing with the Landcruiser I could do a set of pads in, in 15K Shocked Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer...
