first of all hello as ive just joined, been reading forums for a while now, well over a year actually and now onto my second supercharged range rover after going off track for a while with M5, couple of RS4s, 997 C4S - but after all that glad to be back in a proper car.

the continentals on my supercharged are shot showing the usual signs of heavy wear on the outer edges and are down to 2mm elsewhere.

car is a 55 plate on 255/50 R20 tyres at present which were the original fit but all of the tyre websites I've visted so far are recommending 275/40 R20 when I type in my reg plate.

First question is :- is it best to stick with 255 or go to 275 ???? - I would prefer more bite on turn in in the wet and never go off road, but do encounter snow over the winter.


second question is :- dont want continentals again, so anybody got experience of yokohama or general grabber tyres on a full fat ??

hi mate and welcome..

standard FFRR tyre size on 20'' is 255/50/20 but there are loads of RR on 275/40/20, i have 295/45/20 of a hse sport ...
the thinner the tyre the better it is in the snow, wider tyres have better grip in the dry and wet..i think with the 4x4 drive of the RR you should be ok with either 255 or 275... ... - .- -.

Are you sure on the tyre size?
FFRR have 255/50R20 as standard.

yes correct 50 profile as standard and ive edited my original post !!


just off the phone to dealer and they do not recommend 275 due to loss of comfort but do recommend the yokohama tyre.

would prefer less roll and better turn in so 275 might be the best option for me - although car is still under land rover warranty and dont want to give them an out, if I need to claim so maybe best to stick with 255

if still under warranty then could be best to stick with the tyre size thats on at the moment, but once out of warranty then you can do what you want... ... - .- -.

Would a wider tyre aquaplane easier in the wet?
Wider could be better in the dry, but worse in the wet?

My thinking due to more contact area with the road so less pressure per square inch.

depends if you have enough grooves in the tyre ..look at f1 cars with their very wide tyres.. ... - .- -.

That was why i took the 275 x 45 x 20's off and left them in the garage in the wet the car was sliding about more than Wayne Rooneys bell end in a Kellogs Frostie ......

possibly down to the amount of tread and make of tyre you had mick...275 is only 2 cm wider than the standard 255 size and shouldn't make a difference..

any views on the best road tyre brand to go for ??

stick to a well known brand and you will be ok...as for recommendations, one persons view might be different to another's... ... - .- -.

Should have said 275 x 40 x 20 that i had , i just found the road holding on them a bit dicey at times in the wet and thought , up that change these tyres , wife wasn't too happy tho coz i only got them a few weeks earlier,

there is wide and there is too wide . LR fit 255 to the L322 for a reason, personally I'd stick with OEM tyre sizes if possible.

Wet / rain and mud don't like too wide. Dry and sand love wide...

Should that not be 20cm stan .........
