LPG on my 2004 4.4V8

Hi All,
My 2004 4.4V8 runs on LPG, sometimes when I "give it the beans" and floor it, the LPG indicator starts beeping at me. I press the button to disable it, then press again to turn it back on and everything is ok. Is this something to be worried about?

Cheers

Pete

maybe. your lpg system most likely needs setting up properly sound to me as if its defaulting to petrol when under high load , or does this just happen when not too much in the tank , if so could be just sloshing in the tank and then not so much of an issue.

When was your LPG last serviced? Do you ever get the engine management light, have you checked the fuel trims on petrol and made sure LPG matches?

Does it happen if the tank is full?

What system you got?

Blimey - lot of questions - I guess I should've researched first - my bad!

I've not had the RR very long, I'm not sure what system is installed but I've never had it serviced.

It seems to happen when the system is about 1/2 full - although I don't really need to "floor" it very often so it might happen when it's full too.

None of the engine management lights come on when this occurs

Pete

Sorry for the questions trying to help.

Does the EML light work at all? i.e. when you put ignition on does it light up orange?

Can you snap a photo of the button should be able to work out the model from it.

Does the LPG system have a service history? It has a filter that needs to be changed yearly at most. Sound stop me like the LPG system is not supplying enough fuel under certain loads.

Hi Lighthouse,

I wasn't being funny about the lot of questions remark - I just realised that I hadn't given you all enough information to help!

I'm just looking to see whether my usual garage can service Autogas - if not I'll look for another.

Apologies for the poor photo on the LPG button!!!

Ok you have a BRC system which is a good one.

Theres a company on the m6 call go-lpg who are really good.

Sound like you need a service and fuel trim changes.

Thanks for the info on the service company. I've already sent a message to the garage I usually use (BMW specialist) so I'll wait to hear from them first - I like to keep loyal, but if they are not tooled/trained up for it, I'll definitely be looking elsewhere.

The system has a minimum pressure it will work at, during normal driving the pressure is OK, as you floor it you ask for more fuel, this lowers the pressure, if the filters in the system are getting dirty it can't maintain the pressure at the additional flow your asking for so the system switches over to petrol to stop you running lean and damaging the engine, so, no, it's not something to worry about but you should get it sorted asap..

If it has always done it then it could be that it was set up incorrectly to start with, or, that the vaporiser is not big enough for the engine and just can't supply the fuel, it could also be the size of injectors used. If the system is very old the vaporiser could have a damaged diaphragm or be bunged up with "heavy ends" a kind of tar like fluid that builds up from the imperfections in the LPG

Filters are the first place to start, you can change them yourself very easily, they are with the solenoids that control the flow of gas from the tank, most have built in filter bowls, usually one on the tank and one in the engine bay

Solenoids will look similar to this... Filter bowl on the bottom

Filters like this

There should be a big filter as well that is inline between the vaporiser and the injectors, looks similar to this...

Once you have identified which ones you have, try here for replacements..

Or, most LPG garages should be able to sort it, make sure you go to one that is LPGA accredited...

Good kuck Thumbs Up Pete

Thanks for all the info - for an LPG beginner it's really helpful. It's not always done it, when I picked up the car I upgraded from a 300tdi Defender, and spent a good few days "enjoying" the performance difference Very Happy
