Fence query

As with everyone in my street, I'm responsible for the fence on my right side, which I recently replaced. However, the chavs to my left are happy to leave what's left of their broken, rotting fence whilst pretending to have money.
Is there anything on the market that I can put up to conceal it? It's a mess. I think he's secretly hoping that I'll replace it - tempted as I am, I'm not prepared to pay for it. 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

difficult one noddy...you could put up a very cheap fence [on your ground] and paint their side in very bright colours, that might force them to put up a new fence... ... - .- -.

Have you spoken to them? Maybe they dont realise... then if they are still unwilling pursue other options?

I think they have a legal responibility to maintain a boundary fence if they are responsible for it, as you have done with yours - easier said than done when trying to organise a replacement though.

Have you mentioned it to your neighbours, or has this been bubbling under your patience threshold?

I would try to write to them explaining what your concerns are about the fence and hope to see a response.

With a writen request you will be able to keep a record of what your original request might be - and hopefully a formal response from them should you need to rely upon it in the future - polite/casual conversation etc. will not be able to prove the time of your original request and it will not help if/when legally attempting to force them to do something about it - should it really have to go that far.

As much as you might want to do something about it yourself you may not be entitled as its their property and is likely it is also built on their land - if you build a replacement on your land then you could lose a shaving of land that is yours....

...as difficult as it may be try and 'love thy neighbour' it would work to your benefit and is a whole lot less expensive than getting solicitors involved

I had a similar dilemma...sort off a couple of years back..

I had a new fence side and back but my neighbour didn't want there's done (In all fairness it wasn't that bad), but my OCD got the better of me and I just replaced the whole Censored lot... If you are going to make your garden look nice, just do it...Not that more cash.

Downside with having it in writing is that you may have to declare it when you come to sell. Any neighbour dispute must be mentioned, where as a quiet word is fine...

True - but a polite and simple request along the lines of "I was hoping you might want to do something about your fence as is strating to look a little damaged" should be enough to make them at least pay a little attention to it rather than cause a full blown dispute...

...they could, of course, respond with "No - F Censored k off!" - but hopefully they are reasonable people and would appreciate the benefits, or negatives, of having a happy, or Censored -off, policeman living next door Smile

...I was thinking a taser pistol on a dark night, less obvious and should only need to be done the once - could have a lovely fence up before too long Whistle

I had the same thing a few years back. I just went round and had a sensible conversation along the lines of "you do it or if you prefer, I'll do it and give you the bill"

Neighbour asked me to get it done and he paid for it so I got the fence I wanted, he had no hassle organising it and everyone's a winner.
