Well it had to happen finally - last night as I was leaving London to head home to Wales I lost all engine power, the dashboard lit up and I coasted to a stop on the outside lane of the A41. Car would crank but not start. After a long wait the RAC come out and poked about and eventually decided it was the fuel pump. Arranged recovery and gave me the name of a garage who would replace it today.
When I unlocked the car the previous evening after being in the sun all day, there was a high pitched squeal for about 20 seconds from under the bonnet - which I think is the cooling fan in the ECU box. It didn't do it last night when I got back to the car.
The RAC patrol plugged in to read the codes and said there was nothing logged that was relevant, but he did read code P1616 Electric Thermostat Circuit High.
I'm thinking the ECU fan may have blown and the ECU's shut down as they got too hot. Car has been recovered to outside where I'm staying but between the patrol and recovery they have flattened the battery so I can't test my theory that it will start this morning now its a lot cooler. I have the garage coming out this morning to recover the RR to them - should I get them to check the ECU cooling fan first - I assume if the ECU bay temperature got too high because the ECU cooling fan has packed up, that would throw code 1616 and shut down the car to protect itself?
Thanks for any advise
