How To - Front Wiper Motor + Linkage replacement

Managed to squeeze this one in today, customer left his wiper on "Auto" a few days back. Blades froze to the screen, sure you can guess the rest...

Begin by lifting the bonnet in its service position. Remove the lower end of the gas struts and lift up. Lock into place securely

Then remove the pollen filter housing

Lift off the plastic covers

Undo the securing nuts, 16mm. Retrieve the nut, spacer and remove the arm. They are not usually too tight to take off. This leaves this little adaptor on the wiper spindle

Using a wiper arm puller, or in this case, a ball joint splitter, apply pressure to the adaptor until it comes off. Watch for damaging any glass/bodywork. They do come off with a bang

Repeat for other side. Next step is to remove these clips, holding the scuttle panel on

They are a little fragile, and easily damaged. You may want to consider replacing these at the same time. This car had 2 missing already
I found the easiest way was to lift up the whole panel gently from the underside, and tease them out. When they come out, they will go flying, so place a rag over the clip to prevent this

Once all 4 are out, the panel is still held in with 5 clips on its underside, located as seen here

With all the clips released, slide the panel over to the passenger side, and ease out from the base of the A pillar trim, then remove completely

With it removed, remove the 5x T30 screws securing the motor and linkage, lift up the motor, and twist out

To remove the electrical connector, slide it along, and it will push self out as the clip is slid

Refit the new motor and scuttle panel. Switch the ignition on, and push the wiper stalk down to allow the motor to centralize itself before fitting the arms back in

Some of you will have noticed a missing wiper blade. The plastic that holds the blade on had broken. You need a new clip, not listed for an FFRR, but for a Disco 2 Rolling Eyes

The easiest way to fit is to separate the 2 parts, and fit individually.

Once in the arm, fit the new blade, and refit wiper arms to the car. There is plenty of adjustment on the arms to set them correctly. It may take few goes and a bit of manipulation. Operate wipers again to make sure they don't foul the scuttle panel or A pillar

To put the bonnet back down single handed, tuck one gas strut behind the sound deadening Thumbs Up

Refit pollen filter housing, close bonnet. Job done Thumbs Up
