Total alternator fail

Nearly made 3 months without a fault and then the battery light comes on.
Checked the belt was there, it is.
Check battery 11.75 volts
Start engine and still 11.75 volts.
Wiggled all the leads I could find and no change.

Rang the fantastic Craig at Cam Tech who seconded my thoughts in that the alternator is goosed.
He has kindly offered to open up just for me next week, he even checked he had one in stock and rang me back to tell me.

Just hope it makes the 20 miles or so to Dursley on battery power! I had budgeted on a new battery anyways.

So impressed with the battery connectors, so simple and no strain on the post!

My brother works in recovery and comes across this all the time,am not sure about the rr but will ask him but he does say that if there is no charging a blow to the alternator with a hammer will restore charging to a remarkable amount of vehicles as the brushes just get stuck. This may not be a cure by any means but might save your bacon when you are desperate.A great tool has got to be a hammer !!

Pull the fuses for the Nav system, should save that needlessly draining the battery.

Mine packed up on the way to work, it did the 10 miles or so to work and I charged it fully at work all day.

The following day it started and got me 22 miles without any problem so if its a decent battery and Craigs is 22 miles away or less you should be ok. Turn everything you can OFF, including air con, radio lights etc and you should make it.

Craig tried but found so much wrong that it would cost well over the estimate and I would have to foot the bill for the extra.
Back to Auto Protect who want me to take it to a Halfords Auto Centre and use 3rd party parts.

Thank you Craig and for the honest "warts and all" description of what is wrong.

I may be back and have it done properly with all the required parts fitted and stuff the cost, forget auto protect who have only put barriers up.

Thanks for the loan car I must say getting back in mine put a smile on my face, even with the limited range!

Not lost faith in the old girl yet.

All fixed an working, yes it was parts from Euro Car Parts.
The Halfords mechanic was ex Land Rover and knew what to do and said all the bits that Craig had pointed out so I was more at ease. They rang every step of the way and fought with Auto Protec for every penny. My cost in the end was £390.
Did not try to sell me anything extra, may well use them again as it is just round the corner from work. Now there is a recommendation!

I had a sudden failure while driving on the New Year week-end. I had been hearing a kind of whistling/whining for a while and it finally gave up the ghost. Had it replaced at a local 4x4 specialist with a denso oem for £384 fitted. MY 2007 3.6 TDV8 Vogue SE

Filton branch.

Extra was for replacement tensioner, full coolant flush and refill with red stuff, belt, water pump health check, bit of glue on air intake broken stub and nitrogen replacement in tyres. Plus fighting with Auto Protect for their part, a Denso alternator and new seal and 60% of the labour.

Nippon Denso are fitted to Toyota as OEM so I'm fairly confident it will last a while.
