Reliability

I'm on the verge of placing an order for a new AB 4.4 or SC but I am worried about reliability.

I am quite OCD and can't stand anything not working properly on a car.

I have driven German cars for quite a while now and have had pretty much zero faults. I notice that while perusing say the BMW X5 forum that although there are a lot of people moaning about faults the vast majority are the same 4 or 5 failures. Reading this forum it seems that owners are having problems with almost anything and everything!

My question is, has anyone here had a 405 from new which has been totally reliable and fault free? Now this is an awkward question as I know a lot of people seem quite happy to just 'live with' minor faults but I mean NO faults of any kind what so ever.

I really want to buy a 405 but can't live with faults and detest letting dealers mess about with my cars.

Almost had mine a year, and only one minor fault - The tailgate won't close with the key fob button. They fixed it once, but it happened again. Really minor really, will be fixed first service. Apart from that, nothing at all! MY15.5. Great car, 3.0 is more than fast enough, smooth too and almost 40MPG!

I bought mine used earlier this year - but have done over 10k miles including 2 return trips to Bordeaux - so 4x750 mile trips and have had no issues at all - no faults, no warnings - all I've done is put fuel in it.

On any forum, you're only ever going to hear about the bad stuff.

Had mine for 27 months, 30K miles. Only one very minor fault - rising gear change control started to become a bit slow on start up about a year ago, fixed by dealer very quickly. Otherwise (tempting fate), faultless - would not change anything. Still love getting in it every time. And I agree with Pixelpower: 3.0 V6 is excellent, even though less popular it seems. Norman

Had three. First one very early car and had two major failures, in that did not get home, turbo hose [component] failure and rear suspension airbag split after some particularly onerous off-roading, otherwise did 33k miles in 18 months without drama. But remember I do this sort of thing with mine

Second car faultless and 10k miles. Third car (the SC) has also done 13k in 8 months without missing a beat.

BUT I agree with alanm_3 some on this forum have had a dreadful time.

Thanks guys. It seems you get a good one or a bad one, which is a little worrying!

Re cars with zero faults, I've had quite a few and I'm REALLY picky and technical !

Unfortunately if it’s a landrover it will probably have issues at some point in it’s life.
L322 TD6 gearbox, V8 EGR valves, freelander diffs L405 suspension knocks etc.
If you are buying new with the security of a warranty then great. If you are buying used or an enthusiast buying slightly older then yes in all probability unless JLR have made some dramatic quality improvements it will be unreliable.
However as said all manufactures can have issues it’s just JLR chose to abuse that right.
If you require ultra reliability then I am sorry a landrover is not for you. Mine was a blue one! Smile

Don’t forget though sir, most owners DONT come onto forums to say hi! & to brag how trouble free their cars are Whistle If you read any forum, it will be full of frustrated owners looking for a resolve to an issue... That after all, is what forums are good for Bow down
