Hello all,

I've just had the off side rear steel section of the brake hose fail due to corrosion. Brake fluid is now leaking.
Does anyone know what sort of job is it to change this out.

Once you'e got the wheel off it's a 10min job to change the pipe, then bleed the system...

If that ones gone then chances are the other side will not be far behind and I expect the front to back pipe will be pretty grotty as well, while your at it whip out the front passenger wheel arch line and sort out the rest under there...

Usually the way, one little problem leads to a lot of additional work, did all mine earlier this year, parts aren't much, I'd replace the lines with cunifer or similar....

Update.

I've just emailed the selling dealer as I bought this vehicle on the 5th Sept 15 and the vehicle was MOT'd on the 4th Sept 15. There are no advisories. The MOT tester at the garage where the vehicle now is states that it is so badly corroded both sides, front and back, the vehicle should have failed the MOT.


Clearly just a quick MOT to get the car sold with a full ticket. I wonder what the DOT will make of it.

Happened to me when I was driving along the road in my old one As above replace the lot, not worth the worry of another one or indeed section collapsing. I too had the front to backs replaced and they were in very poor shape.

@ije44 - be careful ... Pete's 10 minute jobs do not translate to real world time.

Pete has some sort of time bending machine which means he finishes the job in 10 minutes, meanwhile you have aged to 104 years old.

@Haylands - glad to see you recommending cunifer rather than cuprinol on this occasion . Howard

I did think when typing the reply that there must have been an advisory, mine were very very rusty but had not failed, there is no way they go from good to leaking in two months.

I would get the whole car retested to see what else they "missed" then contact VOSA, hopefully the seller will sort it...

Haha. A bit like the old saying "how hard can it be".
That has bit my arse a few time over the years.
I guess undoing the nut on the hub end might be problematic. We will see.
It's being done on Monday.

What's the routing like. Do you need to remove any big items to get the pipe out/back in for the rear right?

Can the pipes be seen without removal of any under trays etc. Testers can't move stuff so may not have been able to see the problem. They usually put the under tray as an advisory.

My X5 bled brake fluid all over the drive through a bad pipe which a tester would not have seen without moving a tray. 2017 5.0 Autobiography Supercharged

I did wonder this myself but after the vehicle was up on a ramp you can clearly see the corroded pipe. The garage owner then brought in his MOT tester for his opinion and he stated that he would have failed in on all pipes. I know that MOT results cannot be exactly the same when done by different garages due to the human element but you would have at least expected an advisory.

I was reading this thread, and wondering to myself if the wood worm proof brake pipe would rear it's head, and it did That will follow you to the grave Bud.... as long as ffrr brake pipes rust, someone will remember the worm proof brake lines  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

As said, no excuse for missing rear rusty brake pipes....

Nothing to remove to change the rear flexes which are actually two flexes with a piece of pipe in between...

They will come off the calliper ok, just cut the pipe and use a ring spanner, where they meet the rear pipe is the killer, if your pipes are that bad the pipe it fixes to will probably be bad as well.... Then you just chase them all the way to the ABS block...

You have to remove undertray bits to do the front to back ones...

Thanks for your advice Pete, it's greatly appreciated.

I will pass on your expertise. The garage doing the job were mumbling about dropping the rear axle . I was sure it wouldn't be as bad as that.
If I had a choice I would go elsewhere but the garage is in my village and the car is not drivable so I'm kind of stuck, without going to the trouble of recovery and all that hassle.
