Went to have my aircon recharged today, only problem is I have a leak in the condenser.

Just looked on RAVE and this item is a large part (So obviously expensive...)
Can this item be repaired like a normal engine coolant radiator, or do I have to buy new part? (Gulp!)

I've never known one to be repaired, it's throw away and buy a new one

Part of me thinks leave it until next year, but I've heard aircon is good at de-misting the inside of the windscreen on cold and wet days. (Yes, it's the first car I've had with air-con! )

Yes the A/C de-humidifies the interior. Without it you can expect elecrical gremlins all over the place and a general musty interior.
