Team Valley Land Rover - Gateshead

Another big thumbs up from Team Valley from me Thumbs Up

I rang them on Monday 9th Nov and said that the SC needed a service and MOT. They said that they couldn't do it till the following Monday. I told them I was heading to Newcastle on the 12th Nov and that I'd need to call them later to see when I could take it to them later on in the month.

5 minutes later the chap rang me back and said that they could squeeze it in on Thursday and that they even had a courtesy car available.

Taggarts wanted £480 + £55 for the MOT, Team Valley quoted £280 + £45 for the MOT. They quoted me £93 to supply and change the diff oils in the front and rear diffs as well.

The car went in at 8.30am on Thursday and failed the MOT the first time around on the handbrake not being up to scratch. They sorted this out, carried out the service, changed the diff oils and had it retested and back to us for just after 3pm.

They really are a pleasure to deal with when compared to our local dealer. Even after doing 380 miles and having a day out in Newcastle with my sister and her other half, it was still cheaper to do that then take the car to the local dealer. They even made us a cuppa whilst they went through the paperwork and took payment when we arrived back at the garage.

The other main dealers in Glasgow really could learn a thing or two from these boys. We'll be back when the AB needs a service and MOT in April.

David, out of interest what parts/service kit do they use? I presume it was only a basic service???

Ours was serviced by them at the start... They do seem helpful when you contact them Thumbs Up

What was up that that handbrake was deemed a fail (was it not holding the car beforehand/ did they say it was seizing/ EPB? needing striped and cleaned)?

Craig, I'll need to look at the invoice when I get home later on.

The handbrake didn't meet efficiency according to the fail sheet. I rarely ever use it as I leave it in P on the flag driveway. Thankfully it's one of the last cars before the EPB so it's still got the conventional one. They charged £55 (an hours labour) to strip it down and clean it from what they said. I've got a feeling they've maybe tightened the cables slightly as well as it doesn't come up as far as it used to.

it didn't get any advisories either so she can't be on bad condition for a 2006 with 90k on her Smile

Thanks David, was curious because our EPB model former 4.2 SC failed an MOT at the main dealer a year ago because they said the brake efficiency was low and needed stripping/ cleaning and so I stumped up, despite my suspicions because we always - on forum advice - select N and then apply the park brake to hold the car before engaging P, all so as to stop the parking brake seizing up (suppose similar principles apply to non EPB models too?).

The same dealer tried the same trick with me again earlier this year when it was in for a service and 'pre MOT' check but in fact I'd had it MOTd elsewhere the day before and it had flown through... so, when I challenged them, the service advisor, would you believe it, capitulated and said, words to the effect, "we always say that and advise customers it needs stripping and cleaning". A nice little earner if you can get away with it!

Agreed Craig, but unfortunately a lot of garages use brakes as a way of generating cash - My wife's Corsa VXR went in for service last year a week after i had fitted new brake pads all round, she was advised it needed discs and pads - when i challenged them they too capitulated and said it was unnecessary - heedless to say we no longer use that particular dealership Twisted Evil Twisted Evil 2006 (56 Reg) 4.4 V8 Vogue In Bonatti Grey (Gorgeous!!)

I am £ 1000 poorer after the electric parking brake fiasco on 2 cars , one of which was necessary and the other not .
I would have sorted them myself if I had time .

The worse thing you can do is wash the wheels with a hose because water gets in the parking brake drum and causes corrosion . On vehicles with a lever you can gently apply it whilst moving to dry and clean the drums .
The electric park brakes usually have an automated cycle . Every 60 miles on some cars I know .
