I have discovered that the reverse-gear-selected short beep only occurs the first time that reverse is selected after having been in Park. The front and rear sensors work fine. I have enabled reverse gear chimes in the EUCD as an interim safety measure as I have twice now to my knowledge got out and closed a gate to find the reverse lights on and only a small gap between me and the gate. Obviously the quick flick of the wrist to go from D to P has been too quick and stopped at R due to the slight mandatory delay to go from R to P, but not hearing the reverse beep I have assumed that P has been selected. Fortunately the ground slopes slightly down-hill forwards enough to prevent movement in reverse.

Is this a known problem?

My PDC s/w matches the latest level obtainable from BBS so there's a good chance that the s/w is indeed at the latest level. The short once-only beep still occurs in conjunction with the reverse chimes.

The reverse chimes are quite intrusive so only an interim solution to the safety risk.

In all seriousness Graham, might i suggest you get into the habit of stopping the engine when you exit the car to close the gate? Certainly here in the UK, if you either, got ran over by your own car! or it was stolen whilst you were closing your gate! in either case, I’m sure you would NOT be insured sir...

So my point is, if you exit the car to close the gate! Try to get into the habit of shutting the engine off... Its good practice, safer and............. If you turn it off in Reverse, it automatically selects Park for you

Other good habit is to always apply the handbrake when stopped, and before going into PARK. .

More to the point, is this normal for this model L322 (it certainly was not for my D4) or is there a fault that can be rectified? The PDC module is the same physical part as used in the D4 so there has to be a logic fault as no PDC DTCs are stored and the lone beep is short rather than the long one that the D4 made if its sensors were too dirty.

Edit: The non-beeping only occurs if the vehicle is not moved between successive selections of reverse, so not quite the same risk of not being made aware as I though, although I very much doubt that it is a design feature. Hence I'm just not hearing the beep, perhaps due to the radio playing or I'm just too deaf to hear the rear PDC speaker with the leather everywhere in this vehicle and that I already have the door open before the beep occurs and therefore also hear the engine noise. One way or another I just have to be more careful and pedantic about selecting park.
