Catalytic Converter Weld Seam Failure

I know it was fairly common for the weld seam to fail on some early models, but I'm wondering whether this could be part of my "noise issue"

The exhaust system was given an extended warranty in the US, but it was never officially recognised in the UK due to no threat of law suits I assume...

My question: What year range was this a problem?
