2002 L322 4.4 zf5hp24 transmission problems

Hi folks, I'm new to the forum, looking for a bit advice with my auto box, which has a couple of faults.
First one is when you select drive or reverse, within a second or two it engages with a bit of a thud/snatch, this happens every time hot or cold, worse when it's hot.
The second fault is driving in drive mode the box changes up nice and smooth all the way up to 5th, when I give it a bit welly and kick down there is a severe thud/snatch.
When I put it in manual mode, goes up gears fine, when shift from 5th to 4th under load you get the thud, if I ease off the throttle it's not as bad.
I've changed the oil and filter, the oil was black, it was also changed by the previous owner about 12000 mile ago, car has done about 150000 miles

Cheers Brian

With that milage obviously it has not had the fluid changed before, if you describe it as "black" this isn not good with the milage that you have.
You can either keep driving it as it is until it dies.

Drop the fluid again, did you flush or just drop the pan only....ie 5 litres or so?

Flush properly and see if it is any better. failing this put some Dr tranny in it.

Symptoms sound like torque convertor of your lockup for top gear.

Filthy fluid excelerates wear, most likey you are on the way to a major service.
Take it into a decent trans service garage.

Dr Tranny is an excellent product, give it a go.

Flushed it through and also fitted a new oil cooler, it's done about 100 miles since and I checked the oil again and it is crystal clear, so it looks like a overhaul is due.

Hi Brian,

Welcome to the forum,

Your problem may well be the level in the gearbox isn't correct, use the search function to confirm but it has to be done when the oil is between 30-35 degrees and with the engine running. It makes a world of difference apparently.

Just had mine done and my symptoms are very similiar to yours as I don't think my local guy has levelled it using the above procedure.

Good luck with it and hope it is that simple.

Darren

Level won't make that much difference as long as it's something like...

Sounds like it needs an overhaul.... Pete

when it thumps, do you get a BONG 'transfailsafe mode' etc.

as above, you must have it full up with fluid, when nice and warm, not just hot exhausts etc. otherwise it sucks/draws in air, and foams a bit, giving no hydraulic pressure etc.
if its BONGing then you possibly have the split o ring scenario. search threads for 'transfailsafe v8' etc. its not good news, but it is well documented. -had this on mine. Rolling Eyes

We had a similar problem with ours going into Drive and particularly reverse, you revved the engine in reverse and very little drive, then a huge thud as it went it, no bongs or warnings, it turned out to be a crack in the valve block.

A request to RRPhil should help you.

RRPhil has his PM's turned off, he would get hundreds a day otherwise...

He will see this thread next time he comes on... Pete

Hi Brian,

So did the fluid change make any difference at all to the harsh engagement of Drive and Reverse or the 5-4 downshift?

The lower rear valve body in the 5HP24 contains two accumulators – one for the A-clutch and one for the C-clutch – and these act as dampers (combined with some one-way orifice plates) during the engagement of Drive (A-clutch) and Reverse (C-clutch).

The EDS1 and EDS5 proportional pressure control solenoids (also located in the lower rear valve body) are also involved in applying modulated control pressures to the front and back sides of these damper pistons.

When you shift from 5th to 4th the D-clutch is disengaged and the A-clutch engaged so, again, the jerk appears to be related to the engagement of the A-clutch.

As a first step it may be worth having the valve block assembly looked at. This can be extracted from underneath without having to remove the transmission from the vehicle. I’d be happy to look at it for you if you can get it out of the vehicle and posted off to me, or you may prefer to get someone like John Mackie at Glasgow to look at it - though I appreciate that they’re 75 miles away from you.

Phil

Hi Phil, thanks for the reply, changing the oil and filter made no difference. I can strip off the valve body and send it to you, could you pm your details and with costs of checking.
Cheers Brian.

Hi Folks, An update on my transmission problems, contacted RRPhil and our first line of attack was to remove the valve body and have it tested/checked. I removed the valvebody which is a pretty straightforward job, even lying on your back, well anyway sent it off to Phil, a few days later I received a message from Phil saying that the valvebody that had been fitted to my car was an early zf5hp24 valvebody from approx. 1997,so for me this was good news( there has been loads of modifications/apgrades to the valvebodies since then) Phil suggested we try fitting the correct valvebody and take it from there.
The replacement valve body has now been in since late September and the car now drives absolutely spot on. All I have to say now is thanks to this forum and a VERY big thankyou to Phil Thumbs Up
