New SC owner - Side Steps

Hello all - Just bought a well looked after Supercharged RR from a member of this site! It does not have side steps and this is something I want to get fitted as soon as possible as I like the look. I really want the OEM style with the integrated front mud flaps but there seems to be so many versions of them at prices from £130 to £300. Confused

Does anyone know if these are any good?

Hi,
When I bought my Range Rover it was the first thing I bought, came with all nuts bolts etc and front mud flaps, not the cheapest available but im happy with the quality. The tread plate is made from a 3 ribbed tough rubber, underside is 1" square steel frame on which is mounted a ally top plate (the rubber tread plate is secured to this).
Your car will have the pre-tapped holes in place, might just need clearing with a thread tap (2 sizes M6 - M8 depending on location).
They should be covered with a bit of tape from the factory, 3 of mine the tape had fallen off and the threads needed clearing out.
Before fitting i coated the underside of the side steps with Waxoyle, also coated the threads with copper grease.
Cost £234.99 including postage (June 2015) from Direct 4x4.

Cheers Strider - I am happy to spend £200 or around that ball park for the right part, but the flea bay ones are £130. They look OEM style so can't understand why some are so cheap and some expensive.

Looking at your picture, it looks like aluminium sides, when the OEM is all plastic? Is this correct?

nice looking motor you have there. I also had Limo tints yesterday.

Cheers

Hi Buddy,
Yeah, I had the same problem there are so many out there, also, with ebay i discovered that some of the product pics were generic ones.
Regarding the "ally sides" they are in fact a plastic over cover and just wipe clean.
Thanks for your kind comment about the car. I shopped around for ages before that one came along, I'd wanted tints and steps.
I found a few "how to fit" on youtube. As i fitted them on my own that info' was invaluable, as they are bloody heavy!!!.
I used blocks of wood and lots of swearing but was worth it in the end.
Good luck with the fitting.
Peter

These are the one's my Indy fits and he'll be putting them on mine in January.

I also like the look with side steps and SWMBO needs them to climb in and out. I suspect it'll stop the seat bolsters from getting scuffed with sliding in and out.

V8 Noise,
Ive certainly found getting in and out much easier, good point about the seats, The first week of ownership i found i was sliding down the side of my seat to the ground.
Another plus, they will protect your doors from crash bash idiots in car parks thowing their car doors open, I lost count of the number of dings my old RR classic (no side steps) received.

Just bought the Ebay ones as all black which is the look I want. Having them delivered directly to my local garage who will fit them - I now just need to order some rear Mud Flaps to match.

I have having a few touch up jobs done in November including treating a bit or rust on the wheel arches and having the back box sprayed. The spray shop have asked me to supply the paint for the Back Box as shall need to be tough and heat resilient. Anyone have any tips on this paint?

Cheers

I just used a rattle can of black stove paint. Has been well up to the temperatures. Easy to apply yourself. Wink John

Thanks Weegie - I will get some Plasti-Kote Heat-Resistant Paint Black 400ml from ScrewFix - £7.39
Probably get two cans to do two coats.
Do you think this stuff will do the job?

Don't know about Plasti-Kote. Some of the reviews aren't wonderful. The stuff I used was more like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/400ml-Stove-BBQ-Paint-Black/dp/B001W03POA John
