Possible to make the dash/cluster lights come on startup ?

For my MY02, is it possible to make the dashboard (binnacle) lights come on when I start the engine, so to switch them on with ignition live power, instead of with the sidelight switch? Very often difficult to see the dials and info even on what appears to be quite a bright day. .

thats an interesting one Tim..

i find this as well , especially on these dark cloudy days we get now..

you would have to locate the feed for these lights and cut and tap into it...i suspect its around the headlight switch area or an output from the LCM.. ... - .- -.

Looks easy enough, Slate (grey) and red wire in position 8 in plug C0230 that feeds from the LCM, cut it and join to an ign live and it should work... may have a go later as I'd like it as well....

I'm wondering if they come on if you activate the DRL function with an IID.

Don't think so, that wire splits from one leaving the LCM that switches all the interior lights on that come on with the outside lights... heater controls, mood lighting etc.... Pete

That would be OK, how to make that happen when I start the car? .

I tried the different DRL, Canada and Scandinavia modes and none turn on the dash or interior lights.

The exterior lights come on only. Even in this setting at night the auto light function turns on the dash lights at dusk/night only.

You will probably need a diode inline too as wiring the dash lights to come on full time may back feed and turn the side lights on full time too.

What you want to do is easily possible though.

Iirc, All the interior lights run through a power transistor in the the lcm, and their brightness is controlled by the variable resistor sitting next to the light switch.

The main light switch doesn't directly feed the light circuits. It just tells the lcm what the selected light setting is, and the lcm then applies power to the relevant light circuit accordingly.

As mentioned, the output of the lcm is then split to each interior light group. If you wanted the cluster lit constantly at full brightness, I would go down the route of physically disconnecting the lighting wire from the cable feeding the cluster and replace it with an independent ignition controlled feed.

The lcm does not like to be messed with and can be fussy about the inputs it gets from the switch. but it won't throw werrors if an interior light is disconnected from its output. V8 or else ...

No auto lights on a MY02 Twisted Evil

When in the mood will have a look at the feeds on the light switch, and seek out nearest ignition feed. .

That's what I thought I posted above, probably didn't make it clear enough.......

Also the earlier cars don't have auto lights so that part doesn't apply here Pete

Wondering if I could feed from my DRL unit ( I have a separate DRL setup for fog lights, not IID controlled) .

Any ign switched live would do , the lights will draw next to no current, they will come on at full brightness but lets face it they need to be!!!

There are probably ign lives going to the dash already, just probe the plugs.... Pete

@Joe90. Not long replaced the read out binnacle bulbs on mine with led's. As mine is 04/05 specmight be different to yours.
I'm real happy with the result, just a pain to strip all the dash down for 5 little bulbs.
