Engine Swap Advice Needed?

Hi

I am waiting on a full and complete diagnosis, but I currently have a 2007 3.6tdV8 with a suspected blown turbo.

I am the 2nd owner and the car has been lovingly looked after with no expense spared so far, but with an extremely expensive impending repair bill I have been considering some options?

Does anyone have any views or opinions on costs and level of work required to swap out the existing 3.6 TDV8 with either a 4.2 or 5.0 super charged replacement engine?

Due to a reduced number of miles I have been putting on the car I have been considering to change the car for a super charged petrol model. Now I am in a situation where a possible replacement engine + Turbo's are required, could I be just as well to spend the same money on a 4.2 or 5.0 replacement engine?

I am really open to advice here, I have tried to think of the additional requirements of an engine swap, new ECU, Fuel neck filler etc.. but from the research I have done so far the gearbox and running gear, brakes (Brembo's) should not be any different to the SC models?

I am very interested to hear what people have to say on this subject, so please post up.

Many thanks in advance.

if your paying someone else to do it then it will cost a fortune, there will be an endless list of things to sort that won't come to light until you do it... wouldn't even consider it, IMHO an absolute nightmare..... Pete

I have a pair of turbos in the forsale section, engine swop on cars like these are so so complicated the cost would outweigh buying one with the engine you want

I agree with Pete. The car will have several different systems which will need swapping.

The fuel systems are different
The wiring is different
The exhausts are different
The gearing is different afaik even if the box is the same there are different final drives I think.
The rads and cooling systems are different
The cabin heaters are similar but the diesel will have the aux heater so this would need plumbing in
There will be ecu dedicated to the diesel which will need sorting
Then there is the labour.

Not at all worth it. Would be cheaper to sell up and get a decent petrol.

I was pondering at the idea of shoehorning a 5.0 sc into a disco, though this may be an easier option as in theory you could roll a sport chassis under it..... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I think you are reminiscing the old days, of putting a rover v8 engine into a Capri. You only had to saw some metal and bolt the engine to the mounts, and make an exhaust, from old bits at the kwikfit bins, and your mate would connect up the coil, and make fuel pipe from some garden hose, and you were revving it up, and there were smiles all round.
These days, it's just about impossible, especially with fuel change too.

The last time I did an engine swap for a more powerful one was to put an Austin 1100 engine in an Austin A35. Shocked

Okay, thanks everyone for your helpful points. i had the full diagnosis today and not quite as bad as I had feared, although, not what i had hoped either.. Big Cry

Discussing the engine swap with the garage had raised similar issues to these below and a few more, and I suppose as nice a thought as it was and would get me what I ultimately want, its would not be as economical as selling up and buying the right car in the first place.

Having said this I really appreciate everyone taking the time up to post their opinions and points. It has been really helpful!

One turbo had imploded and the other had seized. Thankfully no subsequent engine damage from the imploded turbo has been caused.
