G'day Gents

My 08MY tdv8 has about 240,000 km. Apart from the a transmission failure due to worn output spline it's going well. The transmission failure has me thinking about what's at risk of failing next in terms of big ticket items. My thoughts are diffs, alternator, turbos and EGRs. All but the diffs are really buy new type items. As indicated the car's going well, so no sign these items need replacing.

I probably have the opportunity to pick up a front diff from a low km vehicle for much less than a new or reco unit.

Id be interested in the thoughts of the brains trust, about whether it's worth it.

The front diffs did have a problem on the earlier cars but this was rectified on the latter models, regular oil changes should help prolong the life every 100k km minimum, same with the transfer box. It is worth changing the turbo hoses if they have not yet been done, or at least muting a top right one to have as a spare, as it is the common failure point.

Alternators do fail on the UK spec ones so may be worth keeping an eye on the voltages its putting out, but as preventative maintenance it's a bit overkill. If it goes it goes, worst case it takes the battery with it. But not catastrophic.

Not really much you can do turbo wise, swapping them out is a pretty big expensive job, there seems to be a vague consensus that it has something to do with EGR valves when they go, which are a smaller job. Might be worth checking they are operating correctly every so often, and not stuck, which can be done on a diagnostic. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

The front diff I can't remember many issues with them on the FFRR although I vaguely remember one going recently (on a forum car).

The turbo issues from what I glean on here is EGR and actuator related (and the hoses bursting). My suggestion is to clean the EGRs on a regular basis (no not every week ) and check the actuators (unless they are cheap and then I'd replace them). I would also go for the new silicon hose kit for sure !! MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

I agree. I looked but couldn't find much about diff problems on the L322 series 2. However, mine does have unusually high km. ______________________________

Changing the oil in the diff every 100k might be good the first time around but with such a small volume of oil in the diff and leakage can be catastrophic. As we age leaks are more likely.
How many of us drive more than 20k a year?
I service my own vehicles, I check my fluids once a year minimum.
Stay on top of leaks and I cant see why a diff wouldnt last 500k

Not sure what the oil volume is in yours but my 03 is 750mls so not a lot of fluid should you develop a leak.
I would say that the wheel bearings are likely to be the first thing to go, then you will see seal failures.
The drive shafts are a very busy component as well.

Alternator is a known issue, they have an nasty habit of dying suddenly without warning. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Is the TD V8 the same as the petrol V8?
