BMW 4.4 V Jaguar 4.4 version

Your thoughts please, about to go and have a look at a very clean 2005 4.4 but it has the Jag engine.

Jag engine is very good. I had it in 2 Disco 3's. BMW engine is a little more eager.

The bmw engine on the other hand is far more common, easier to work on and the parts are cheaper and more easy to find. L322 Vogue 2003

Jaguar lump has slightly more power and slightly more torque but slightly higher in the rev range. I think the fuel economy is about the same. In terms of the numbers they're fairly evenly matched.

I wouldn't fall for the "German Engineering" being superior clap trap. I've got the BMW v8 in mine, i'm not over impressed with all the things that go wrong with them. They don't like holding coolant, they've got some truly crap design features (rubber cam cover gaskets and washers for example). So far just about every part i've had to replace has a BMW part number on it.

If it's a nice car then go for it.

I've read on here a few times that the Jag engine is the preferred one but there are very few with them in as they started to come online as the SC engines got fitted and most went for that i believe. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I had a BMW V8 FFRR for 4 years/12k miles. The only engine related problem I had was the small coolant hose at the back and the electronic thermostat. Both easy/cheap fixes

I also have an E39 5 Series with the smaller 3.5 version of the M62 engine. It has done 285k miles!!

Checking my various lpg connections now as I want to lpg the jag 4.4. I know that there are reports of valve seat problems but an electronic flasflube type of kit should sort that out and I would be using one of the best conversion companies in the North West.

My search for a low milage ( i.e. less than 75,000 ) 2004 to 2005 lower tax bracket 4.4 BMW'ed engined vogue FFR has been going on for a couple of months now. In the old days I was prepared to travel anywhere but did this for a mate who wanted a 2004 BMW version last year and boy did we see some badly described pieces of junk, almost bordering on mis representation with their descriptions. Just asked about one on auto trader a eek ago., some where down Essex way. Asked the dealer if they could send me a few shots of the rear wheel arches of their immaculate 2004 model.... still waiting.

Ran an AJV8 for 18 months - very good.

Plus points:
Super smooth
Good on fuel (!) - used to get 23 mpg on a run
ZF 6 speed 'box

Neg points:
Quite "car like" power delivery; torque higher up the rev range. This was great on the motorway, but slightly annoying here in the Peak District. I overcame it by driving in manual mode most of the time which i preferred.
A few electrical niggles - but it may just have been my car ?

Thumbs Up Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

I think the jaguar 4.4 is more common in the US as an economy choice, where diesel is less popular. In the UK people either bought the TDV8 or went for the more powerful supercharged 4.2.

I'm not saying it's a bad engine, but it's not really that superior to the Jaguar unit.

But surely the point here (as mentioned above) is that the BMW 4.4V8 has the cream cheese 5 speed ZF auto box and the Jag 4.4V8 has the much acclaimed and well sorted 6 speed ZF.

True enough, but the 5speed zf is now where near as fragile as the gm unit. Thumbs Up but the 6hp26 is better. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I has always been under the impression that both the ZF and GM 5 speeds were as bad as each other but just in slightly different ways! There are pages of debate on that on here though so I am not looking to open that can of worms! I had the TD6 / GM box and I always thought it was a very pleasant, relaxed drive. This forum frightened the life out of me though so I shipped out before it went pop.

For my 2p, the 4,4 AJV8 is worth going for on the gearbox alone. Apart from some solenoid issues (cheap fix) you very rarely hear of a 6HP26 with a problem. Thumbs Up 2006 4.2 SC

It does seem the GM box in the TD6 is far worse. There are lots of posts about doing expensive flushes on the 6 speed ZF.

But it's certainly a more modern box than the 5 speed and has an extra ratio, so it's a definite plus point for the Jaguar powered car.
