My oversize spare tyre does not sit on the floor of the well so the floor is free to resonate from the rear tyres and those of passing trucks!

Interestingly the quietest tyres on camskill in a 255/50/20 seem to be Hankook:

Which have a class 1 69db rating. 3db better than the Scorps. Not heard of anyone fitting them though.....

Just been out to have a look at the spare wheel compartment and I can't see any sound proofing in there at all, just bare panels and floor, I think I will buy some dynamat or equivalent and have a go at sound proofing this area.
Just another point: how the hell are you supposed to lift the spare wheel out of the well, impossible when your an old git like me. Big Cry

You need to be young and small so you can straddle the wheel well. Or if you're old enough JLR assume you can pay someone to do it for you... Whistle Ed

I'm sure in the manual, it shows you that lifting the 'lid' with the strap connected, it slowly lifts the wheel, then you pull another strap to tug it out.

Not mine, it has an LPG tank,

No lift strap on my MY12 so just have to stand inside facing out the back and lift the wheel straight up then onto the tailgate.

Ironically I find it easier with the tailgate shut because being a shortie I can lift without reaching over too far. Ed

Spare wheel lifting strap available to retrofit, bolts in behind the wheel below the rear seats, loops under the wheel then when you need it hook it into the top of the lower tailgate and drop the tailgate down, this lifts the wheel so it can be slid out Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I managed to get the spare wheel out after a bit of huffing and puffing, I needed to do this as I want to sound proof the spare wheel well. The next time the spare is needed, I will be calling the AA.
I received 20 sheets of Silent Coat today, £49 from e.bay. I will be fitting tomorrow, pictures will follow.

Well I prepared the spare wheel area for sound proofing

Made a start on the left hand side looking in from the rear

Getting there, I took the silent coat up the back of the jack position, over the top and just under where the rear seats are

Nearly there now

I had some spare foam cushioning in the garage, so added it to the floor around the compressor

And now the finishing touch, wheel back in and secured, the blue bag at the bottom left of the picture is my tow hook, sits snugly in the sponge, it has to go here as it is not a LR tow hook so does not fit in the recommended place.

Well after a good drive round, I am convinced it has improved the drone from the boot area Thumbs Up

Looking good. Just hope that foam doesn't get damp or wet or it'll smell a bit..... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

I did mine today although basically only the flat areas in and around the well - silence is golden! The front needs attention now so will start a couple of exposed side panel areas under the bonnet.

Have you considered the lower tailgate at the rear. I found it has no sound deadening material in it all and was very "tinny" when I tapped it. Adding sound deadening sheet significantly improved it.

The best way to do the bonnet is to remove the sound insulation sheet and stick patches of sound deadening material in the recesses formed by the bonnet framework and refit the insulation sheet.

Having looked at mine there is there is a built in weak point as regards getting rid of engine noise into the cab. Namely the plastic housing that contains the cabin filter. This plastic housing extends significantly into the engine bay and although it has a sheet of insulation material on the engine bay side I suspect this is inadequate and that a lot of engine noise can pass through the insulation sheet and the plastic wall of the housing and into the cabin by way of the ventilation / ac system.
Imo the insulation sheet needs to be removed, sound deadening material fitted to the underside of the plastic housing and the insulation material refitted.
I you want to be really pedantic there is also a path for sound to pass into the cabin by way of the air duct from the "electrical box" in the engine bay to behind the dashboard.
When you have a TD6, every little helps. Thumbs Up

I don't hear engine noise even though the engine acoustic cover is not fitted, only reverberation from the BFG AT tyres. The noise seems to mostly be emanating from the ends of the fascia although I know that the source of noise is often hard to pinpoint.
